About Power of Hope Kibera
Power of Hope Kibera (POHK) is a community-based social enterprise that works in the Kibera Slum, located in Nairobi, Kenya. The POHK model empowers local women to establish their own hygiene-centered micro-enterprises. The businesses are then used as a platform to promote healthy behaviors such as handwashing with soap and treating drinking water. Sales women are empowered by earning an income and by becoming respected peer educators. The community is positively impacted because they gain access to hygiene products, such as liquid soap. Additionally, they receive ongoing strategic messaging, educational materials, and community hygiene trainings that encourage them to use the products in a manner that will improve health and prevent diarrheal disease, which is endemic in the community.
