Hi Team 8!
Students started exploring slope and slope-intercept form of equations this week. Their second assessment of this grading term will be next week! If you would like to help your students please encourage them to watch the practice videos and problems included in the document linked below. As a reminder, ALL STUDENTS in Mrs. Hammock's math class have WEEKLY HOMEWORK or what we like to call learning opportunities. They are given to the students the first day of the week and they are always due on the last day of the week. If your student has a 50% on the Weekly LO in skyward it means they are choosing to NOT do the weekly homework and that will effect their grade. Our weekly homework is designed for students to practice prior concepts to promote retention and to practice new concepts before assessments.

What a week!
Monday - We originally had a quiz scheduled but after the long weekend we all decided that we would not perform our best if we took the Quiz on Monday. Instead, we played a review game which went quite well! We had new Animal buzzers which were a blast. (and crazy)
Tuesday - Quiz day! The students did quite well! I was very proud!
Wednesday - Weird day! Due to the shortened day, plans changed! 5th and 7th hour watched a Lewis and Clark video and took some notes for our classmates who didn't get to watch it! This information will help everyone in our next project!
Thursday - Special Halloween Lesson!
Friday - Lewis and Clark! We really dove into Lewis and Clark here! Their whole expedition, what they went for and we read a letter from Thomas Jefferson telling what he expected out of the trip!
Next week we are starting our main project for this unit. You students will be creating a project report card grading Lewis and Clark's journey. I will have basic supplies like markers, crayons, colored pencils and the like available. On Friday students will decide what they want their project to look like so they might be coming home with a supply list of items they need. Items could include: Poster board, craft materials, etc. I would like students to be as creative as possible.

Hello JCMS Parents and Students!
Check in with what is going on in Language Arts class by logging in to your child's Schoology account. Check the Language Art Course and notice that every week contains a "Weekly Sheet" that outlines everything we do in class. Most of our work and assignments are completed in Schoology and accessing this information will help you stay abreast of your child's assignments.
On Thursday, 10/31 students will be submitting the Character Expert PowerPoint assignment. This is a large assignment that has been assigned for a week. Feel free to ask your student which character they chose and have them show you their presentation.
Students have been working their way through Harper Lee's To Kill A Mockingbird. This is a challenging novel and admittedly some of our students are struggling with the material. I would welcome parents to ask their students about the chapters we are reading and engage in conversations outside of the classroom to insure that we do everything possible to provide a successful experience with this text.

Foundations Language Arts

We will be finishing up Unit-1/Lesson-3 by the end of the week. We are discussing story elements that help us locate details in the story.
Students are required to write in their agendas each day when they enter the classroom prior to completing their bell-work. It is a participation grade each week, and parents can see what students are doing in class each day.
HOMEWORK: NO HOMEWORK THIS WEEK! Students receive a homework reading log at the beginning of each week, and it is due every Friday. They are required to read at home for at least 15-minutes each night (Monday-Thursday), and complete the log/questions. Students must remember to turn in on Friday. The reading log was placed in Schoology this week so that students could access it electronically as well if they would prefer to type it.

Encouraging regular school attendance is one of the most powerful ways you can prepare your child for success—both in school and in life. When students are absent for fewer days, their grades and reading skills often improve—even among those students who are struggling in school.
