Interviewing Skills
During the week of February 18th-22nd, the School Counseling department visited the Consumer Math classes to go over interviewing skills and techniques. Members of the department modeled a poor interview and then demonstrated a strong example of an interview. Students were asked to critique both interviews finding strengths and weaknesses. Students were provided sample questions that they may hear in an interview and were assigned the task of creating their own responses. On the final day of the lesson, students were each pulled individually by members of the counseling department to have their own mock interview. Students were able to choose the place and position they were applying for, whether it be a future job or college interview. Every student was provided feedback on their strengths and weaknesses from their individual interview. It was great getting into the classroom and co-teaching with our staff. The School Counseling Department looks forward to our next collaboration.

Time Management Presentation to Juniors
On Friday March 8th Azria Roundtree from Post University came to speak to the juniors about Time Management and College Responsibilities. Students learned about study skills, getting involved in Extra Curricular activities on the college campus, being on time for class, etc. Ms. Roundtree provided the students with some personal do’s and don’ts of the college experience specifically as it relates to time management. The students were also able to create a mock college schedule. This was a very informative and interactive presentation.
SAT School Day April 9th
On Tuesday April 9th, all Junior students will be taking the SATs during the school day as their state mandated test. Juniors should report to school on-time, as they will not be allowed into classrooms once testing has begun. Students will be able to use their scores from this test date for college applications during their senior year. Unfortunately, the essay portion of the test will not be offered during this sitting, so any student who plans to apply to a college requiring the essay will need to sign up for it on www.collegeboard.org. We highly encourage all students, who plan to apply to college, to sign up to take the SATs for a second time in June, August, or October 2019. It is encouraged for students to eat a healthy breakfast the morning of the test. If students own a graphing calculator, they should bring it to school for this day. For any questions regarding the SAT school day, please contact Assistant Principal Joseph Morgan at (203)819-8164.
Chat & Splat
Chat & Splat is a student-driven idea that the School Counseling Department implemented as an activity where students relieve stress through art. We meet on Thursdays during Flex time in the East Commons. Students do not have to be artistic to be a part of the group. They just come to relax and create whatever kind of art they like. Students are provided with canvases, paint, play dough, watercolor markers, molding clay, scratch art, and pictures to just color. The creation of art provides a freeing up for difficult emotions, a distraction from stressful thoughts and experiences, and a chance to get into a state of "flow" that can be restorative in many ways. Counselors have been enjoying Chat & Splat as a way to give students the opportunity to release some stress while doing some art!
Sophomore Career Lesson and Individual Planning Meetings
All 10th Grade students were given the career inventory “Career Cruising” in a lesson. Students were asked to answer a series of questions in the inventory which led to further exploration of careers matching their interests. Their identified career results allowed students to investigate details such as job description, required skills, education, and related college programs. Students watched an interview related to a career and wrote down relevant career information.
As a follow up to this lesson, School Counselors then used January and February to meet with their sophomore students (called the “Sophomore Check-in”) to review this information. Counselors also used this time to review current grades and future related courses, and also check in with students personally and academically.
9th Grade Recognition
The School Counseling Department would like to congratulate the Freshmen class for successfully completing their course registration on their own. Of all the grade levels, the freshmen class had the least number of students that still needed to register for classes after the Feb 25th deadline. This accomplishment is noteworthy due to the fact that when the students were in 8th grade, the School Counseling Department went down to Tyrrell to schedule students' courses in the classroom setting. When they come up to the high school, they register for courses independently. We are very proud of our young Eagles, and are expecting great things from them as they spread their wings and soar!!!
