CSCS Elem Panthergram!
September 27th, 2020
A Message from Mr. Anderson
I hope that you have had a wonderful weekend and are ready to get back to school! Please always remember, even if we are not physically together, our hearts and minds are joined to work hard and play hard to grow and learn!
Please note that since there is a plethora of information for parents that we want you all to have easy access to, we are formatting the parent Smore Panthergram newsletters to have the newest information first, and then at the end of the Smore information that parents may need as a reference at a later time. This Smore's most notable updates are:
- School Info App - We have added a button in the app so that parents can complete a student absence form and also to submit a tech help request.
- Attendance - Please make sure that your child takes attendance in his/her digital classroom before 2:00pm. Every day! There has also been some questions regarding students that miss a day when they are supposed to physically be in school. Please note that the students program will dictate present or absent. If a child is scheduled to be physically in school and they are not, they will be considered absent and coded based on the reason presented. If a child has to be quarantined, then they will be considered a temporary remote learner and will then be taken attendance based on the remote learning guidelines.
- Health & Safety - The District has received new guidance from Steuben County Health. A detailed explanation is in this Smore along with a flow chart explaining how to approach if your child is sick.
- Picture Day and Ordering Pictures - Picture day is on October 7th & 8th. We will be extending our hours for picture day on October 8th for students on the White Team to come to school and get pictures taken for your child.
- After School Program - We have started to collect information and will be ready to start in the middle of October. We are also looking at offering zoom tutoring for students as needed also.
- Monday October 5th Conference Day - Although we are currently in a hybrid model, we are still holding true to our dedication to continued professional learning and growth for our faculty and staff. Please note that there is an abridged Zoom schedule for that Monday that is in this Smore and also in your child's digital classroom as we get closer to that day.

Message from the Health Office Regarding Student Absences and Protocols
See attached CS Flowchart for failed screening AND the following information…
“On Friday, September 18, Steuben County Public Health updated their guidance for schools regarding required follow-up options for students or staff members who fail the COVID-19 health screening. After receiving the guidance, the District utilized that guidance to determine modifications to our district re-opening plan regarding Health and Safety screenings. The purpose of this letter is to share the updates to our Health and Safety screening guidelines.
First, we would like to say, “Thank you” for doing your part in screening your child prior to entering the school bus or coming to the school campus. It is increasingly important to continue to conduct these self-screenings as this is the first level of screening for all students and staff. The screening includes two components, take your child’s temperature AND to be able to utilize the COVID-19 screening questions located on our SchoolApp COVID screener. These questions must be completed once every 14 days for each your children. However, you should screen your child for any of the COVID-19 symptoms, including taking their temperature, on a daily basis. The second level of our health and safety screening plan is the temperature screenings that are conducted upon entry to all district buildings. Finally, for any student who develops any of the COVID-19 symptoms throughout the school day, a third level of screening and evaluation is conducted by the school nurse.
If a student or staff member fails the COVID-19 screening, whether at home or after entering the school building, the student or staff member must follow the CS COVID-19 Failed Screening Flowchart to determine the appropriate follow up actions. The options include undergoing a COVID-19 test, visiting a healthcare provider, or self-quarantining for at least 14 days. Siblings and household members may stay in school unless they, too, exhibit any of the COVID-19 symptoms, their ill family member is referred for COVID-19 testing by a healthcare provider, OR if the family chooses to self-quarantine for at least 14 days. The CS COVID Failed Screening Flowchart indicates the requirements for the ill student or staff member to return to school following a failed screening. The District asks that families follow up with the school within 48 hours of a failed screening to share their follow-up plans for their ill family member.
If at any time, you have any questions regarding the district guidelines for ill students or staff members, please contact the school main office. It is important that we continue to have open communication to ensure the absolute safe environment for our entire school community.
Sincerely,
Melody DeCamp

A Message from Ms. Powell
It is wonderful to be back to school! Although it feels quite different, working together, we will make it a wonderful school year!
Everyone should have received a form for the BackPack Program. The BackPack Program provides food to your family on a weekly basis. This year we are hoping to add produce! If you would like to participate in the program, please fill out the form and send it back with your child. If you did not receive one and would like to participate, please contact me at 607-527-9800 Ext. 3105.
Also, everyone should have received an outreach form for the After-School Program. We will be continuing the CS After School Program this year. We ask if you are interested in the program that you fill out the form and return it with your child. This will help us gather information needed to structure the program during this time. If you did not receive a form, please contact me.
Remember, Fall is now upon us and this brings colder weather. Please make sure you are sending your child to school with the appropriate outer wear to keep them warm.
Also, Lost and Found is located in my office, directly across from the main office. If your child has lost an item, please have them check to see if it has been turned in. You may also call me to see if an item is here.
If there is anything that you need for your child/children this school year, please reach out to me. I will work with you to make sure you have everything you need. We can do this!

School Info App - Communicating with your child's teacher(s)
How to Get messages from your child's teachers: One important way to get messages from your child's teacher and to make sure that you are getting updates from the school is to go to "My Alerts". Once in "my alerts" make sure that "Enable Push Notifications" is turned on and that all of the buttons are turned "on".
Next... look at the bottom of the screen, you will see the picture of a bell next two an icon of two people. Click on the icon of the 2 people. This will then bring up teachers names along with icons to turn on notifications. Search out your child's teacher(s) and turn on those notifications.
If you would like to send your child a message, go back to the main screen and click "conversations" this then works just like text messaging on your smart phone. Make sure to put a title to the message so you know who you are sending it to when you go back to the app.
New Things!
- The student absence and Tech Help Forms are now in a button on the first page of the app! Just click and you can fill everything out on your smartphone!
A word of advice - Always check and make sure when you are in the app that you are in the correct school. Make sure that it is the Campbell Savona Elementary school:)

Face Coverings - Basic Expectations
The topic of face coverings (masks) has been a part of our presentations as we have been preparing for the first days of school. The District's "Day in the Life" of a CSCSD student explains this in a fun way!
Mr. Anderson and Mrs. Proudfoot handed out the donated PTO face masks the first day of school. It was awesome to see how excited our students were!
For some basic expectations, please refer to the following general bullets below.
- Students will be expected to wear face coverings in all common areas and hallways.
- Students may take off a face covering when sitting at his/her seat in the classroom and cafeteria.
- Students and teachers must put on a face covering when working in small groups closer than 6 feet from one another as they interact with each other in the classroom.
- Teachers will help to prompt students when it is time to put on face coverings and also to take them off.
What are students be doing on "Remote" Days
Through many conversations and parent feedback, we at school understand that due to every families unique circumstances that providing flexibility is very important. This is why we worked very hard to have as little time strictly scheduled as possible. We this in mind, the only weekly scheduled time for ALL students to log onto Zoom and attend class will be on Mondays with their entire class (All teams! Red, White, and Blue!). Each grade level will have a specific time to log on so that they can, in real time, talk to their classmates and teacher. This time will be shared prior to school starting. This will also be a critical time for students to hear about the lesson objectives of the week, assignments due, and to have fun communicating with their classmates.
Everyday Expectation - Every student must log on to his/her digital classroom (Seesaw or Google Classroom) and complete the attendance form prior to 2pm.
Mondays - Required classroom Zoom to keep connections with the entire class and teacher, and to get the lesson objectives for the week and assignments that will be due.
Tuesday/Thursday and Wednesday/Friday Remote Days - These days will allow parents and students flexibility in which they can help support their child at any time during the day because the lessons will be pre-recorded and available on Seesaw (PreK-2) and Google Classroom (3-6) along with the assignments and teacher feedback. The only time requirement on these days is that every student must log on to his/her digital classroom and click on the attendance form so attest that they are "in attendance" for the school day by 2pm. It is a state requirement that the school must take attendance every day. We will be practicing all of these procedures and processes with our students on the first day of school!
Since teachers will actively have students in their classrooms Tuesday-Friday; therefore making themselves unavailable for students learning remotely from home, there will be a set time for "office hours" via zoom and telephone in which teaching assistants and special education teachers will be available to help students and parents. You will be notified of these times as the school year begins.
Individualized Expectations - In order to provide a multi-tiered system of support for our students, your child's teacher/special education teacher/grade level Teaching Assistant may reach out to set up specific times with your child to hold small group Zoom meetings to support differentiated and individualized instruction as is needed.

THE LAURA RICHARDSON HOUGHTON CORNING YOUTH CENTER PREPARES TO HELP YOUTH AND FAMILIES NAVIGATE THE NEW SCHOOL YEAR
CORNING, NY – September 4, 2020 – The Laura Richardson Houghton Corning Youth Center looks a little different right now. Since the 1980’s it has been a constant presence in the local community as a drop-in center for all youth during their after-school hours. Since early July, the Center has been able to re-open its door under the NY State COVID 19 guidelines for recreational programs.
Now, to best serve the community, the Laura Richardson Houghton Corning Youth Center will remain open for the foreseeable future from 8:00am-6:00pm daily for youth ages 8-18. This will allow youth, on days they are not attending in-person classes, to complete their virtual lessons and homework in a safe place with Youth Center staff providing a structured format. However, only a limited number of youth will be accepted into the program at this time in order to assure social distancing and safety guidelines. There is no charge for this enhanced programming.
Youth accepted to the program will take part in a structured school format at the Youth Center from 8:00am-2:30pm on days that they are not participating in in-person classes at their actual school building. Youth will be asked to bring their school-provided lunches on the days they are at the Center. An alternative location to the Youth Center will also be available, if needed, to host more students on their virtual learning days.
From 2:30pm-6:00pm, the Youth Center will offer a variety of activities including outdoor recreation opportunities, arts and crafts lessons, tutoring, and other special programming. The Kids Café will provide after-school snacks and dinner to all participants free of charge. The Youth Center will be accepting applications for just the afterschool drop-in center, as well, in compliance with NY State recreational program re-opening guidelines (based on space available).
Parents and guardians interested in signing up their children to take part in the Corning Youth Center’s new school year programming should submit an online registration form which can be found at www.familyservicesociety.org. Please call the Youth Center at 936-4116 with any questions.
