Raureka School Term 1 Week 8
Newsletter 24 March 2021
PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Kia ora koutou katoa, Talofa lava, Kia orana,
A huge thank you to everyone who came and participated in the Carnival last week. This years carnival was the best we have had for fundraising so far, and it looked like we had more people attend as well.
On the night $5680 was raised to go towards the camp. This is fantastic and I've only heard really positive comments from everyone who attended. Thanks to the students, parents and staff for organising such a succesful evening.
Congratulations to Kowhai for winning the inter house tabloid sports with Whero a close second.
Duffy books- next week all of our children will receive two books for themselves from Duffy Books. I'm really happy to see the first allocation come. These will be given out on Monday.
Zoo trip- today 30 of our children are heading off to the Wellington Zoo to spend the night and have a look at how the zoo runs and to also have a behind the scenes look at how the animals are looked after.
Tough Kids challenge- 80 of our seniors are also taking part in the Mitre 10 Tough kids challenge being held at Unison Park today. I know that our children are going to represent themselves and us really well.
Neighbours Day Coffee- On Monday we were fortunate to have had Bay Espresso with Shayne Jeffares and members of the Neighbours Day Aotearoa committee provide up to 100 free coffees to our community from 7:30 a.m., it was good to see the happy faces of the people getting the free drinks. What a great success it was.
Swimming Pool: Reminder - we will close the pool this Friday 26th.
A further reminder that Easter this year is in term time and this means that school will be closed from Good Friday, 2 April and open again on Wednesday 7 April. All Schools are closed on the Tuesday.
Please remember that classes start at 8:55 a.m. each day and all children should be at school, unless they are sick, ready to start then. When the children arrive on time they do not miss out on valuable learning time and they feel as though they haven't missed anything. Keep in mind too that when children arrive late it can be hard on their classmates as after an interruption - some children struggle to refocus on the lesson.
Headlice/Nits/Kutu
These nasty little creatures are around at the moment. Please check your child's hair weekly at least and treat your child if they have any lice.
We do have free treatment lotion at school if you would like some.
We have had a number of children leave the grounds before school to go to the shop and buy food, please remember that once your child is at school they need to stay in the grounds.

Upcoming Property work
We are now able to fix these areas, after gaining Ministry of Education approval.
The old seats will be removed as well as the tree stumps and the area will be tidied up with new seating, hopefully some shade sails and a new sump installed to stop the water pooling.
We are looking at options now and we're hoping that this is all done before the end of the year.

· School Uniform – this is compulsory. No exceptions.
All children are required to have the school royal blue polo-shirt, royal blue hat, and on colder days the royal blue polar fleece jersey. All of these are available at the school office.
The lower half of the uniform (short, longs, skorts, skirts) must be plain black and can be purchased in town No stripes, no flowers etc, can
be purchased in town.
· Do your child’s records need updating?
o moved house?
o phone/cellphone numbers changed?
o living arrangements changed?
o emergency contacts changed?
o medical details?
Supervision for our patrollers.
We again would be grateful for any parent who could spare ½ hr BEFORE SCHOOL ONLY, to assist our patrollers. The children are fully trained; you just need to support/supervise with them as children arrive at school.
Please contact Chris at the office if you can help. If you helped last year and would like to continue, please still contact Chris J. You will need to be Police vetted for this.
Medical Reminders
We often have a few ‘bugs’ around the school.
· A common one is a nasty cough/flu type illness. Keep your children home if they have symptoms of this as it spreads easily.
· If your child has had vomiting or diarrhoea, they MUST stay home for 2 days after the last event. This illness definitely spreads quickly around the school.
· Headlice are always around so make sure that you check your child’s hair regularly (we suggest weekly) and treat the hair if necessary. We have treatments available from school for free. Just pop in and we can give you some.
· If your child is at all unwell, please keep them home so that they don’t pass bugs on to other children. Also if a child is feeling unwell they are not able to learn easily and are much better off at home snuggled up in bed.
Don’t forget to contact the school office to let us know when your child is unwell please.
