A Letter from the President
Notes from the President.
May 6, 2021
With great joy and some uncertainty, we are going to resume in-person meetings! On May 18, we will gather at the church in the larger room where we met when we first moved to this building. There will be a few changes from our normal procedure, but we will try to be as close as we can. The major differences will be masks, snacks, and distancing.
We will all wear masks while in the building, and we will be respectful of fellow members boundaries. No hugging or close contact without permission. No snacks or drinks will be provided. Since some members are in a time crunch coming from work to the meeting, we will not prohibit all food, but please try to keep it to a minimum. If you want to have water, bring your own. We are not set up to do temperature checks. We will do our utmost to provide a zoom connection for those who are not comfortable meeting in person. The link will be sent out a day or two before the meeting.
And above all -- if you are ill – stay home.
We voted to move our meetings up by thirty minutes shortly before we quit in-person meetings, so we will have the church open at 6 and try to start the meeting at 6:30. Check elsewhere in the newsletter for information about the program.
The June meeting will be an old-fashioned garage sale. We will sell tables for $20 or half-tables for $10. This will be a garage sale for guild members, not for the general public. Details of this event will be discussed at the May meeting.
The quilt show is beginning to take shape! It will be held in the Irving Convention Center August 19-21. Get your quilts ready to enter when the entry forms come out. We will be talking about how you can be involved in the show at the next few meetings.
We will need volunteers to work at our booth and to help with various aspects of the show. And we MUST have a volunteer coordinator to insure that we have enough volunteers at the right times. There may be some serious arm twisting at the meeting.
The link to enter your quilts is
https://sewingexpo.com/Events/Dallas,TX/NTQFEntryForm2021.aspx
Please enter one or two quilts. We can’t have a quilt show unless we have quilts to enter! The deadline for entering is June 1. The quilt does not need to be complete when you enter, but there needs to be enough to photograph for the entry form.
We also need mini quilts for the mini quilt auction. This is a good way to earn money for the guild. They need to be turned in to Judy Faulkner so that they can be entered as a group.
We are continuing to the reality of our current situation – some days with better grace than others, Be safe. Wear your mask. Make a mask for someone else. Get vaccinated when you can.
Sew on – it’s good for the soul!
Sarah

MEMBERSHIP
MAY MEMBERSHIP – FWQG
It is not too late to join the FWQG. Two former members rejoined at the guild retreat last month. They
realized how exciting it is to be with other quilters in-person to share stories, jokes, ideas, quilting tips,
and friendships. With us returning to in-person meetings this month, you also have the opportunity to
share these same feelings and experiences.
Give your quilt sisters a call and invite them to join us at the May meeting and/or to join the FWQG.
Contact judi.janes@yahoo.com for more information.
Optimistically,
Judi Janes and Carolyn Hughes

RAFFLE QUILT
The raffle quilt winning ticket was drawn during our November Zoom meeting. The winner was Beverly Peterson, who came to pick up her quilt the very next day. Enjoy your beautiful quilt, Beverly!
In spite of the difficulties caused by the pandemic, we managed to make a profit of around $750 thanks to all the members who bought and/or sold tickets. Thanks to Chris Tomich who pieced the quilt, to Lynda McGee and Shelley Clauss who quilted it, and to Melissa Picha (The Compass Centre) who helped choose the fabrics and gave us a great guild discount.
RETREAT 2021
BEES
REMNANTS:
FRAYED KNOTS BEE Members met via Zoom to chat. Everyone was at work on assorted projects.
ROGUES:
TIGHT KNOTS BEE
We met in person at Barbara Anderson’s house for the first time in months. It was great to see everyone and catch up on family and community events. When our business meeting began, we showed the NICU quilts we will present at the next guild meeting. We are proud to have 25 quilts from our bee for the hospital. Next, we showed our masks for the FWISD elementary school. Grace told us how much the kids are enjoying picking out a mask. It is hard for the students to narrow it down to just one mask. It is always nice to be appreciated. We talked about upcoming retreats in August and November; it sounds like things might be getting back to normal soon.
Show and tell was extreme, because we hadn’t seen each other in such a long time. Pat Wagers shared her cross-stitch Easter pillow, Spring wall hanging, mug rugs, and lots of other goodies. Cecilia Vega is working on making her quilt backs more interesting and showed many examples to show her progress. We should all be as creative as she is. Cheri Bigham made a boat bag. It opens into two different sizes. Cheri also had project bags made from silk ties to show. She gave each of us a basket and needle holder she had made. Judi made a t-shirt quit and a quilt she for her grandson. Carolyn Hughes has been working on wheelchair quilts and lap quilts for the hospitals. Chris Tomich showed a California king quilt made for one of her children. It was big and beautiful. Peggie Herring had mug rugs and a wonderful quilt with bees. I want that bee quilt BAD. We finished our meeting with refreshments and a game of Left Right Center. Barbara served petits fours and Cheesecake. Pat Wagers took home the floral fat quarters. A good time was had by all—so nice to see and talk to each other again.
BEV RAMSEY FUND
Bev Ramsey was a charter member of the guild, a past president, teacher, and friend. We lost her way too early. The fund was set up to help those in need to be able to enjoy the things she loved very much, retreats and workshops. We should be able to send 2 people to retreat this year. Application forms will be available at the November and December meetings or by sending an email request to Karen Holder. Applications should be in no later than the end of January. The applications may be given to a member of the board or to Grace Stroud.

NICU QUILTS
NICU Quilts
The NICU at Texas health is now receiving lovies. I will pick them up from you if you have some or you can drop them off at my house front porch if you want. I have plenty of flannel if you need some. Let me know. These little ones need your help. Thanking you in advance
JPS was recently named the best hospital in the country by Washington Monthly. They are always very grateful for our donations. They recently sent the following note.
“Hope you’re having a healthy start to the new year! On behalf of JPS volunteer services, we want to ensure that you know how much we appreciate you. Whether it’s been through sewing, quilting, crocheting, or knitting - our new mothers, babies, and our cancer patients enjoy what your heart and hands provide them – that caring comfort, the feeling of gratitude and happiness when a volunteer or nurse hands them your precious gift. Thank you!!!”
Their webpage for their needs is
https://www.jpshealthnet.org/community/volunteer-opportunities/other-opportunities-to-serve
They currently have issued urgent need requests for receiving blankets (36”x36”) as well as afghans and quilts for adults.
If you’re interested in sewing other things they also have requested ostomy bag covers and small heart-shaped pillows for breast cancer surgery patients. They’ve also issued new requests for baby mittens and fidget blankets.
Julie Hedden is currently serving as collector and deliverer of donations. So, please let her know if you have items (Julie.hedden@sbcglobal.net). Or call JPS directly at 817-702-1596 (Katie Bonifas) to arrange to drop off donations.
