Mustang Minute

Friday, September 23rd

From the Principals' Offices

Greetings Mustangs!

It's been a GREAT week at Brookwood once again! Students are now settling into their daily routines and it is great to see all of the learning taking place! Our students in K-5 have been busy working on building their stamina in independent reading. Congratulations to Mrs. Nast's 3rd grade class for reaching their 15 minute goal and a shout out to Ms. Bartucci's and Mrs.Erickson's 4th grade classes for already reaching their classwide goal of all students engaged in sustained silent reading for 30 minutes! This is HUGE!

Mrs. Fitzsimmons has been conducting "Minute Meetings" with every student at the elementary school. This allows her to have individual conversation to see how they are adjusting to a new school year.

Students in Mrs. Kanthack's 8th grade science classes are engineering; using various bottles, cardboard, sticks, styrofoam, pipe cleaners and more! They are working together to design and build functional cars! Students in Ms. Mohr's classes are busy building their interpersonal conversation skills in Spanish - it is awesome to see them being challenged to use Spanish to interact with the teacher and each other during class time! And, our young artists in 4th and 5th grade are creating abstract art pieces grouping shapes, lines, and objects. Their finished products will be hung in the art hallway at BMS in the coming weeks.

Don't forget that tonight is our annual Glow Run event! This is a super fun event that is fun for all members of the family. Registration starts at 6:30pm and the run begins at 7pm. The cost is $5 per individual or $10 per family. Be sure to dress is neon so that you GLOW!

There are several more exciting events and happenings in the coming weeks. Please note that opportunities involving parent participation and volunteering during the school day, such as our upcoming Gold Walk and Physical Fitness Days, require some paperwork and a background check to be done in advance. Please read on for more details.

Have a fantastic weekend, Mustangs!

Gearing Up for Parent Volunteering

Throughout the school year Brookwood has many opportunities for parents to partner with the school through volunteering. Some of these will include, but not limited to, chaperoning field trips, assisting during classroom activities, large school or district wide events, etc. To ensure the safety of all our students, all volunteers need to submit and pass a background check. These forms can be completed ahead of time and individuals will be added to the approved volunteer list. This is good for the school year. If you intend to volunteer, feel free to complete the attached forms and send the forms to your child's school office. Thank you for your cooperation and involvement.

Bike Ride Benefit for Juvenile Diabetes Recap

Several Brookwood families enjoyed our annual Family Bike Ride event this past Saturday at BMS. Families chose between an 8 mile trail ride led by Mrs. Kanthack and a more casual short distance subdivision ride on their own. We finished up the day with a mini presentation from Chief Balog and a representative from Avant about bike safety and bike maintenance. Special thanks to Mr. Halbesma and Callie Coari, Junior Ambassador for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation [JDRF] for helping to kick off our rides. And a HUGE thank you to all who donated to support this wonderful cause!

The Golden Horseshoe Moves On...

With this week's passing of the Golden Horseshoe, I would like to recognize Lisa Engel! Mrs. Engel is one of our Paras at the middle school and she has been a big help in the classroom. We are lucky to have such a patient, encouraging, and all-around wonderful support for our students! Mrs. Engel recently helped cover in the main office as well. She is always willing to step outside her comfort zone and be a team player. We couldn't do it without you!

What's Happening in Miss Skalecki's Class?

In Ms. Skalecki's 3rd grade class students start the year with STEM challenges. Students are given a "challenge" and have to work together in their team to reach the goal. Students brainstorm together, and then work to complete the challenge in the allotted time. This time students were given two pieces of paper, and an arms length of tape and had to create the longest paper chain. Each group had a blast with this challenge and the results were close! Great teamwork happened in Ms. Skalecki's class!

What's Happening in Miss Stanislawski's 6th Grade Science Class?

Students started the year investigating how something can act like a mirror and a window at the same time! In science class, they were able to have a first hand experience investigating that using one-way mirror film, a flashlight, two boxes, and two toy animals (which were their favorite part of it). When the students looked in the lit up side of the model, the one-way mirror displayed a reflection, like a mirror. As they looked in the dark side of the model, they saw straight through the one-way mirror, like a window. Students will continue to investigate this phenomenon and they will eventually be able to provide an answer to how something can act like a mirror and a window at the same time!

From the Athletic Director...

What a wonderful week of Brookwood athletics! The cross country team has been running their hearts out at each meet and performing well. They have a meet tonight at Badger - come out and support your Mustangs!

The softball teams also pulled out victories last night against Lakewood! The Boys A team won 30-1, and the girls A team tied at 3-3 while the B team won 6-5. They were all exciting games to watch! We will have a busy week next week as we’ve rescheduled both of our games that were rained out. We will be playing Randall at home on Monday, September 26th, and Riverview at Riverview on Wednesday, September 28th. We also have a game Tuesday at Trevor-Wilmot. We appreciate your flexibility during this rainy softball season and hope to see you there cheering on our Mustangs!

Our online spiritwear store is up and running! Please use the link below to order for all sports at Brookwood Middle School! This online store will be open until October 28th - no late orders accepted. All orders will be delivered to me to hand out at school unless you select the “ship to home” option at checkout. We will have another spiritwear store open during the month of January.

Go Mustangs!

Brookwood Clothing Closet

The Brookwood Clothing Closet is a free resource for students and families in need of gently used clothing. During Back to School Night, the clothing closet was open in the middle school art room. The next open shop night will be during fall conferences, however any students in need of clothing are welcome to stop in the art room before or after school. Families can also email Mrs. Garrett with specific requests for clothing or any questions.

School Picture Retake Day

If your Brookwood student was unable to get his/her picture taken at Open House, don't you worry! Picture retake day will be on November 1st during the school day. Information on specific times will be distributed as the date gets closer. We'll look forward to seeing those smiles!
