Collecting and Returning Remaining Items (Recogida y devolución de artículos restantes)
Thank you to all who came and picked up their stuff last week. We still have a number of items remaining. The office will be open from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm tomorrow and Tuesday and then it will be closed for the summer. Please come and get your stuff. You must have a mask on and social distance.
If you absolutely cannot make it before Tuesday then please email me to make special arrangements. Since yearbooks still aren’t in we will reach out to those who ordered one as soon as they arrive and provide some options of when to pick them up.
We will continue Second Harvest Food Bank once per month this summer at Kennedy. The next date is Tuesday, June 16. It will take place at 9:00 am in the gym parking lot. See the flier for more details below for June, July, and August.
Supplies (Suministros)
Due to all of the restrictions for opening back up thanks to COVID-19, we have to make sure everyone has the same school supplies accessible whether at school in a classroom or doing distance learning. This is of course an increased cost for next year.
The plan is to make all Kennedy students a bag with the necessary supplies (including the specific notebooks each teacher likes to use). We also still want to include lots of hands-on activities in classes. Students can’t work together, so again, every student must have their own supplies. For example, in seventh grade for our opening engineering unit, the students do a circuit project and work in groups. Instead, each student will now need to have a set of materials.
Instead of going out and buying all of your supplies this summer, we would prefer you make a donation to the PTO and/or purchase items off of our wish list to help us out since we will be providing your student with their needed materials. We will send out a message in July with all of the details.
Thank You (Gracias)
I would like to thank all of the Kennedy staff one more time for their efforts this year. Thank you to all of our partnering agencies as well. I look forward to a great 2020-2021 school year despite all the challenges we will have to overcome.
Thank you to all of our families who volunteered and made donations to Kennedy this year. We couldn’t have done everything we did without your support. Finally, thank you for all of the support and love families gave their students this year.
Cougar Connect
This is the last regular Cougar Connect of the school year. I will send out the Cougar Connect as needed throughout the summer when there is important information to communicate. Once we get closer to the start of school I will resume my regular newsletter on Sundays and will determine if the added Wednesday communication that started during shelter in place is needed.

Summer Bridge
Summer Bridge begins tomorrow, Monday, June 15. We have lots of fun projects planned and the students will get to meet ten of our teachers, as well as students from other schools. If for some reason you still haven’t picked up your bag of supplies you can do so tomorrow morning starting at 8:00 am in the office. Class starts at 10:00 am.
I sent out an email this weekend with an attachment of the letter we gave you in hard copy form when you picked up your supplies. This will allow students to click on each Google Meet link needed for each class instead of typing it in. The week two links were included as well.
Connect-In-Place
Here is an opportunity that was shared with me by Kennedy parent and Sequoia counselor, Melissa Perez. The program is called Connect-In-Place. Here is the description of the program they sent her:
We’re creating an all free, online summer camp with weekly one hour sessions on topics ranging from coding, math, science, creative writing, and art. Alongside the educational enrichment classes we’re offering, we also strongly believe that during such a crazy time everyone is in need of a community and a safe space, so we are planning on organizing various support groups and collaborative, fun activities.
This interactive summer camp will be taught by UC Berkeley students, and it will begin on June 22. It will be broken up into two 1-month long sessions:
Session 1: June 22-July 17
Session 2: July 20-August 14
Here is our website: https://www.connectinplace.org/
Here is the interest form for parents who would like to apply: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSckTfeqswhlQfAo97_f8XuubeVfM8G9_uAJx8bydonzGJoHhw/viewform

Next Year (El próximo año)
A lot is still up in the air for next school year. It does appear that we could start the year with some part of school online or all of it, which I know is frustrating for some of you. I also know some thrived with the at-home learning model. All districts are waiting for more guidance as we get closer to the start of school. We have multiple different plans/schedules we are working on for Kennedy so we are ready.
Based on student, family, and staff feedback, as well as administrators’ observations, here are some new things we are exploring for at-home learning for next year:
Starting the year with some standard technology training to make sure everyone knows how to use email, Google Classroom and a number of apps, read the Cougar Connect each week, etc.
Google Classrooms set up the same way to make them easier for students and families to navigate.
Updated teacher websites set up similarly, again to make them easier to navigate. We can also put all links onto one Google Doc again so you can access all teachers’ assignments/websites from one page like we did during shelter in place this year.
A set schedule with certain times students attend each class. (We wouldn’t have all seven periods each day to help balance workload and screen time).
A homeroom class to start the day. This teacher would be responsible to really know the students in that homeroom and have regular contact with these families. This time could be used for attendance, announcements, academic support, SEL lessons, and socialization.
Opportunities for small group work with teachers and differentiation.
Training on all apps and email for parents/guardians.
