ADMINISTRATION UPDATE
Dear CCS Families and Community Members,
While we are beginning to plan for the next school year, it is bittersweet to announce that we will be honoring and celebrating a few teacher retirements. There are no words that can express our true gratitude for the amazing gifts that the following teachers have given to the children, families and staff members of the Charlotte community:
Christa Duthie-Fox, Grades 6, 28 years at CCS
Kris Gerson - Grades K-4, 21 years at CCS
Kathy Lara - Grades K-4, 30 years at CCS
Penny Stearns - Math Coordinator, Math 7th/8th, 6 years at CCS
Leslie Thayer - Grades K-4, 34 years at CCS
Save the date- Graduation for 2021
8th graders will be graduating on June 10th. While we are not sure what to expect from the updated health guidelines, we’d like to start planning ahead for this special event. Jen and the Omega team will host a virtual parent informational on Wednesday, April l4th at 3:00. A link will be shared with parents closer to that date. If you are unable to attend, but still want to participate in the preparations, please send Jen an email.
We hope you all have a wonderful weekend!
Kind Regards,
Stephanie, Jen and Cassandra

MUSIC AND EDUCATION - A RESPONSE DURING COVID-19
By Andy Smith
It goes without saying that the past year has been something like we have never seen in our lifetimes. My musical training and experience (and concepts I have tried to instill in our student musicians) have helped me navigate these uncharted waters.
When playing music with others it is important to listen and adjust. If I am playing a clarinet duet with another musician and they are playing softly, I need to blend with their volume in real-time. If I am playing the bass in a jazz band and the soloist crescendos I need to do the same to support the intent of the soloist. If a drummer decides to play double time, so should I (listen and adjust). Many of these musical concepts are not planned rather decisions made at the moment. This practice has allowed me to listen and adjust to the needs of the students and changing schedules. When do we need to get under the hood and dive deep into heavier musical concepts in class? When do we need to build community through musical activities? If we listen to our students we will know how and what to adjust to meet their needs while providing them with a quality musical experience.
As jazz musicians we are improvisers. Often with a simple glance from a fellow band member, it is our turn to “speak” through our instruments creatively to the context of the arrangement. At a moment's notice, we are expected to perform at a high level and communicate our ideas clearly to the audience. Things have changed rapidly this year with the evolution of the pandemic and our responses to the safety of all. At times we have been faced with changes monthly, weekly, and even daily. Occasionally this calls for improvisation and creativity on the teacher’s part. My musical experience has been an asset to dealing with these changes. I am thankful for the training I have had, the support of our fabulous administrators and community, and the opportunity to pass it on to our students and CCS.
TRAFFIC AT PICKUP ON HINESBURG ROAD
We have had several communications this week asking us to address traffic safety concerns during afternoon pickup at the main entrance. We know that it’s not an ideal traffic pattern, but it’s also the only one we have! When picking up your children, while you’re waiting to enter our driveways, please do your best to allow room for traffic. Also, please make sure you are exercising due caution when exiting onto Hinesburg Road in front of the school, as there have been many instances where cars have almost been struck.

GIRLS ON THE RUN (GOTR)
Our season begins the week of April 5 and is 8 weeks. Our team will meet at Charlotte Central School on Wednesdays and Fridays after school from 3:00pm-4:30pm. We have comprehensive COVID-19 protocols in place. All activities have been modified to ensure physical distancing, shared materials have been eliminated, and coaches and participants must wear masks.
To ensure the girls’ experience is not disrupted, our team is prepared to transition to virtual sessions, if needed, in response to changes in our community. The season will culminate with an empowering 5K Celebration hosted at our site!
The registration fee is $92. GOTRVT provides financial assistance directly on the
registration form for qualifying families. Please contact GOTRVT directly at
