Abortion
By Seth Smith
Who, What, When, Where, Why's of the event
Abortion is the deliberate termination of a human pregnancy, most often performed during the first 28 weeks of pregnancy. This act involves the family and the unborn baby. Abortion started in ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome and probably earlier. It was accepted back in the day but attitudes changed in the 20th century. People began having strong opinions about whether it is okay or not okay. It is estimated that about 20% of pregnancies end in abortions. Abortion is something which many people have strong feelings for or against. This has resulted in protest and violence.
Perspective #1 media portrayed event
The media in this case is pro abortions or pro choice. The article shows bias through headlines; for example the headline for the article is her body her choice. Their argument is that it is your right guaranteed by the U.S. constitution. They also argue that Reproductive choice empowers women by giving them control over their own bodies. Another fact that pro choice media use is person hood begins after a fetus becomes able to survive outside the womb or after birth, not at conception. One last thing the media says is that fetuses are incapable of feeling pain when most abortions are performed.
Perspective #2 Media portrayed event
Media that is against abortions also exist and have very good arguments as well. The article showed bias through photos. I put one of the photos below this paragraph to show the bias. Firstly they believe that abortion is murder. They also say that fetuses can feel pain during the abortion procedure. Another fact anti-abortionist believe is that life begins at conception, so unborn babies are human beings with a right to life. One last belief is that abortion is the killing of a human being, which defies the word of God.
Media bias explained
There is a ton of bias in the media in both sides of the argument. For starters most of the “facts” are theories or beliefs. For example pro choice media says that the fetus can’t feel pain when the abortion is preformed but there is no proof that the fetus can or can not feel pain. Another bias the media uses is the way the report there side or bias through source control. In the article I read neither side addressed the other side of the argument. Both articles also used very biased titles, like her body her choice. The title for the pro life article was stop the murders.
Criticism #1
Both pro choice and pro life use feminist criticism. Feminist criticism is literary analysis that arises from the viewpoint of feminism. For example pro choice people say that reproductive choice empowers women by giving them control over their own bodies. Another example from the pro life side of the argument is that if women become pregnant, they should accept the responsibility that comes with producing a child. Both of these views show feminist criticism.
Criticism #2
It is very evident that both sides of the argument on abortion use Marxist criticism. Marxist criticism is all about the money. For example in the pro choice side of the argument; women who are denied abortions are more likely to become unemployed, to be on public welfare, and to be below the poverty line. Another example is abortion reduces welfare costs to taxpayers because the less pregnancies there are the less amount tax payers have to pay. This is just a few of the many examples that show Marxist criticism.
