RI Charters Under Attack
House & Senate Bills Seek to Limit How Many Families Apply
House and Senate Bills Would Allow Cumberland Town Council to Limit Number of Cumberland Residents Attend Charters
If passed, these bills would allow Cumberland to limit the number of resident children who could apply to any public charter school. This would set a precedent other cities and towns would surely follow.
Local government should not be allowed to limit families' access to free public education.
We need your help!
The most important thing for you to do is to send an email today to your state senator and representative giving your name, saying you're a registered voter in RI, and say that you strongly oppose these bills because they will shut down charter schools in RI. To find your legislator, go here: https://vote.sos.ri.gov/.
Please also email the Senate President (sen-ruggerio@rilegislature.gov) and the Speaker (rep-mattiello@rilegislature.gov) as well. You can use the following:
Dear Mr. Speaker/Senate President:
My name is _________, and I am a registered voter residing in ________, RI. I write to express my strong opposition to H 6023/S 892. (Insert sentence re: affiliation w/a particular charter school and/or connection to the speaker or senate president here if you want to personalize the email/provide more context.)
This bill would mark the beginning of the end of charter public schools in RI. If Cumberland's town council is given the power to block families from attending charter public schools, it would set a terrible precedent for other town councils to follow, and RI's outstanding charter schools would inevitably be forced to close their doors. This is bad policy, and I urge you to oppose it.
Respectfully,
