France Trip 2018
(picture: The group in front of the coach just before setting off!)
The trip to France was a huge success! The two chaperones from Gananda both got sick and had to go to the doctor, but it was a learning experience so it was actually interesting. The kids all stayed with their host families and found that communicating wasn’t always easy but everyone was willing to try. We went to Mt. St. Michel our first day there. The next day we went to the German cemetery in Normandy, La Pointe du Hoc where there are huge craters from the bombs of WWII and what remains of the German bunkers, and then the American cemetery in Normandy. The weather was not cooperative but it is always a moving experience.
Then we had a 3 day weekend for Easter during which some students got to go to Paris, some visited extended family of their hosts’ and/or they got together with other kids and their penpals on the trip. The teachers were able to visit Dinan, a small, beautiful city in Brittany and we had a lovely dinner with the entire group of adults involved in the exchange at a Greek restaurant. Easter was spent eating delicious food and relaxing with the host families.
On Tuesday, we went to the Loire valley for an overnight stay in Tours in order to visit 2 castles. We saw Chambord castle on Tuesday , which was actually considered just a hunting lodge back in the day, went to Tours to shop and have dinner and then on Wednesday, we went to Chenonceau castle. Chenonceau was pretty much everyone’s favorite (but the weather was a lot nicer that day!). Then we headed back to Rennes, Rochester’s sister city. On Thursday, the group went to visit the city of Nantes where there is a giant mechanical elephant that you can ride in and the elephant will spray the surrounding crowd with water. Unfortunately, our kids didn’t get to ride the elephant but they were able to go on a carousel of sea creatures! That night was the “soirée bretonne” where we gather at the school cafeteria and there is a live band playing Brittany music and the kids learn to dance the traditional Breton way.
Our last day in France was spent in St. Malo. It was the nicest weather we had all week so we lucked out because this is a small walled city and you can walk the ramparts and/or walk out to the various islands when it’s low tide. We started the day by touring a former Pirate’s house - very interesting! Then we shopped, had lunch and enjoyed the nice weather. We then went back to Rennes to gather our luggage and say goodbye. We always say “The more you cry, the more fun you had!” (It’s actually prettier in French). It was a long and tearful goodbye and then we made our way to the Charles de Gaulle airport hotel, spent a quick night there and left for the US Saturday at 11.
We were exhausted and happy to be home but also grateful for another safe and successful trip!

SchoolMessenger phased out at the HS - Schoology is our platform for communication
Please note - district communications and emergency messages will still be sent via SchoolMessenger.
Gananda Central School District sends out notifications to parents via phone, text, and email messages during emergency situations through a software program entitled School Messenger. This system is separate from the Parent Portal system which keeps student records and information such as contacts, grades, and attendance. If your contact information is correct in Parent Portal, but you are still not getting the emergency notifications from the District, please contact Shannon Bergstresser directly at Sbergstresser@gananda.org or 315-986-3521 ext. 2408. At times information in the Parent Portal is updated but School Messenger is not. We can only provide information to parents if our records are current, so please make sure if you move, change jobs, or get a new phone number you let us know!
