Women's Center & LGBTQ+ Programs
What's happening November 16-20
A word from Jenn,
Well it's here, the last week of classes for the semester. I don't know about you, but this has been a semester unlike any other! As we approach Thanksgiving, there is much to be thankful for. I am thankful for you all - my students, my colleagues, my staff. I encourage you to take a few minutes this week and think about the things you are thankful for. Jot them down in a journal, post about them on instagram, or just tell a friend.
I am also thankful for the ways we'll be able to stay connected over the extra long winter break this year. Read on, below, for ways to connect with us via our new coaching program, Thrive, or take a step to get your stress level under control by signing up for a Koru class. Are you worried about how supported you'll be when you head home for the break? Sign up for our Holiday Encouragement Line.
Lastly, we've had the privilege of collaborating with Dr. Stefanie Sevcik's GC2Y "Sex and Resistance" classes this semester. They have worked to bring you weekly events focusing on different aspects of the work that is done in the Women's Center & LGBTQ+ Programs. The students will be presenting at the final symposium for the semester on Tuesday, November 24 from 1:00-3:00 pm. If you've missed any of their programs, no worries! You can check them out on our YouTube Channel. Also, be sure to check out all of the student's webpages. They are filled with each groups' research, resources, and vlogs.

Thrive
Imagine someone asks you - What do you want?
“I want more balance in my life among all of my responsibilities, but I don’t know what that looks like for me.”
“I want _____, but I’m not sure how to get there.”
“I don’t know exactly, and could use some help figuring it out.”
If any of the above sounds like you, we invite you to be a part of Thrive, a new coaching program from the GC Women’s Center & LGBTQ+ Programs designed to help students identify and go after their goals in ways that are rooted in their values and strengths.
Here’s what you’ll get:
community with a small group of folks who are also committed to their own growth
plenty of skills and tools for self-reflection and goal setting
regular 1-on-1 coaching with a Certified Life Coach and CliftonStrengths Coach

An estimated 10,000 persons are trafficked from Nigeria every year.[1] Popular destinations in Europe include Belgium, The Netherlands, Italy and Spain. In Benin City[2] in southern Nigeria , a city with the infamous reputation of having the highest number of sex workers exported from Nigeria, there is a new middle class springing up: mostly families with daughters in Europe. Known as "The Travellers," the women are also challenging cultural norms of what women's roles are in a patriarchy.
[1] It must be noted that because the trade is illegal, the projected static is probably lower than in reality. The statistic is most likely based on the number of repatriations recorded.
[2] A 2006 UN report estimates that more than 80 percent of Nigerian women trafficked abroad to work in the sex trade come from Edo state, where Benin City is located.
