JACOB'S RESCUE A HOLOCAUST STORY

BY MALKA DRUCKER, ET AL Billy Cook

MAIN CHARACTERS

Jacob, Sholom, and David, were all brothers. They lived in Warsaw, Poland. They were Jews. The Roslan Family, Alex and Mela were Polish. There son was Yuruk, and daughters name was Marishka. TheRoslan family lived in the countryside away from most of the NAZIS.

THE PLOT OF THE STORY

THE NAZIS had just invaded Poland at the start of World War 2, and had rounded up all the Jews, and put them in the Ghettos of Warsaw, or in concentration camps. Jacob's mother had died, and the father had left them with the grandmother. She sent Jacob to live in hiding with the Roslan family. His brothers were young and sent to hide in the countryside so they would not be caught if they cried. the reasons were simple, to survive. Jews were being killed everywhere. This story is an example of the mass murders the NAZIS did to the Jews all over Europe.

THE RIGHTEOUS AMONG NATIONS AWARD

WHY DID THE ROSLANS RECEIVE THIS AWARD AFTER THE WAR?

The Roslan family hid Jacob even though they would be put to death if the Germans found out about them. They could be turned in by other people at any time. When all the children got sick with scarlet fever, the Roslans had to sneak them into the hospital for treatment by bribing the workers. They had to sell their new house to pay for the bribes, and move into a rundown place. they sacrificed a lot. During the hiding, they find another boy named Alex, and take him in even though it puts them in greater danger, for they don't know if he could be a spy for the Germans. Because of these three acts of compassion and self sacrifice, they are awarded this recognition by the Jewish government.

A quote from the book that stuck with me.

Page 8. " I spent four hours finding this piece of meat". What this means to me is the Jewish people in Poland were literally being starved to death by the Germans. Food was very hard to find, and people would do almost anything to find some.

How reading this book affected me.

I have read about world War 2 in school and saw movies about it, but this book showed me how it affected everyday people caught up in it. How awful all war is, and the stupidity of it. It shows how if tyrants get into power in a country, it can affect many other countries and cause millions of people to die.
