A Message from the Principal
Greetings,
Last week, a parent asked me if I had any children. It reminded me that although I’ve been the principal at Maple for 11 years, many don’t know much about me. I have two boys, Lucas and Evan, who are a freshman and senior this year at North Central High School. They keep me busy with sports and teenage parenting. Ha! I’m married to Greg and we enjoy camping, concerts and spending time with family/friends. All the Harrison boys play golf, and I enjoy riding along on a beautiful day. I also watch LOTS of soccer. I absolutely LOVE my job and working in Avon. I’ve been an educator for 26 years and have worked in IPS, MSD Washington Township and Avon. I feel truly blessed to work with your children. They make me smile every day. My days fly by and I always have a fun story for the dinner table at home. With a couple of high school students, I’m ahead of where many of you are as a parent of an elementary school aged child and hope to share some of what I’ve learned along the way this school year. I look forward to another year of collaboration with Maple parents and caregivers to insure it’s a fantastic year for each and every child who attends Maple.
Have you registered online for the PTO Walk-A-Thon? We’ve already raised $3,300 out of our $10,000 goal. Thanks to all of you who have donated. I can’t wait until next Friday. Also, a gentle reminder that RSVPs for Grandparents’ Day are due next Thursday, August 30th!
Have a wonderful weekend!
Sincerely,
Nikki Harrison

Counselor's Corner
A Message from Your School Counselor
The counseling department is pleased to offer sharing groups to struggling children because we believe children can create their own solutions and that healing occurs when children experience understanding and support from their peers. These groups typically meet once a week during lunch or recess. Through a series of games and other carefully researched activities, children share their feelings and experiences with one another. They are also taught skills that enable them to cope with difficulties. At this time, we are prepared to offer groups on the following topics: emotional regulation, divorce, grief, family alcoholism or incarceration, friendship skills, study skills, self-control, and adoption. If you feel your child could benefit from one of these groups, please contact me at the number below. I look forward to working with you and your children this year.

Avon Schools use the online service CareDox as a tool for parents to provide medical information. The system enables student immunization information, physical exam results, medication information, and nurse visits to be stored securely and compliance with HIPAA and FERPA regulations. Families are able to access CareDox at any time from their computer, smartphone, or tablet to see their student's activity in the clinic and will receive nightly communication regarding any clinic visits that may have occurred. Please make sure you've signed up for an account with CareDox.
The following guidelines will be used in determining when to send a child home:
- Fever> 101 F. Children who are ill should be fever-free for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medication before attending school.
- Witnessed vomiting or diarrhea (defined as 2 or more liquid stools in a 24-hour period). Children who are ill should be vomiting or diarrhea for at least 12 hours before attending school.
- Suspicion of untreated conjunctivits, or pink eye (redness of the whites of the eyes with purulent drainage). If pink eye is diagnosed, dropes need to be used for 24 hours before attending school.
- Suspicious rashes that may be contagious.
- Injury that may require further evaluation and treatment.
- Untreated head lice - presence of live lice.
- Suspicion of an untreated contagious condition. If an infection has been diagnosed, children need to be on antibiotics for 24 hours before attending school.
- A condition or illness that is causing such severe symptoms that the student is unable to function in class. Examples include severe headaches, continuous cough, persistent stomachache, etc.
We look forward to taking care of your child during this school year. If you have any questions, please contact your school nurse.
Thank you,
Heather Everidge-Adams
