The Padilla Post 8/22/2022

August 22, 2022

Providing every student with the keys to open the doors of their future.

A Note from Principal Purfurst

I just wanted to start this week's Post with a thank you to all of our students, staff, and families for their handling of our false alarm lockdown on Wednesday. As I mentioned in our message that day, it is never something you want to go through, but I'm proud of how everyone handled the situation. Again, if you have any questions regarding what happened, please do not hesitate to reach out to me!

Drop Off Procedure Change!

Beginning the morning of Tuesday, August 23rd, our procedures for drop off will change. These changes are being implemented in anticipation of future poor weather (so that students do not have to stand outside if it is too cold, raining, or snowing) and to increase instructional time (so that students can begin learning right at 7:50 AM).

All students will be allowed to enter the building at 7:30 AM. Please do not drop off or leave your student unattended on school property prior to 7:30, as no staff members will be outside the building to supervise them prior to that time.

Any student (Kindergarten through 5th Grade) who IS eating breakfast will enter the building through the main doors and go immediately to the cafeteria to eat.

Any student NOT eating breakfast will go immediately to their classroom upon entering the building. Staff and teachers will be in the hallways to help guide students to those classrooms.

Students in 1st Grade through 5th Grade will enter the building through the main doors then proceed to their classrooms.

Students in Kindergarten will enter the building through the same doors they have been, but will not meet their class outside. Instead, they will go directly to their classrooms.

School will still officially start at 7:50 AM, so if you are arriving with your child after that time, they will need to enter the building through the main doors and be signed in at the main office, regardless of grade level.

An Update from Dean Hawkins

Safety Information:

Thank you for your help with First Grade pick up after school this week! Our first grade team appreciates your patience and kindness as they worked hard to ensure that our students connected with their families in a safe and timely manner!

Wednesday’s Unexpected Lock Down:

Despite the fact that we were all a little shook up during and following the events from Wednesday afternoon, we are extremely grateful for the response from our students and staff. As the shock has worn off a little bit, we have had the opportunity to reflect, learn and respond to our own protocol that we follow during a lockdown. This week we will be meeting with the district safety team and the Brighton Police Department to follow up and ensure that we are all on the same page as far as best practices are concerned when dealing with the safety of our students and staff. As always, we welcome your questions and concerns and encourage you to visit the office or reach out to Josh Hawkins if you have any questions about the lockdown from Wednesday or any other safety drill we prepare for at Padilla Elementary!

Parking Lot: A few reminders as we move into our third week of school:

  • Please stay in your car if you are dropping your student off or picking them up in the “Hug and Go” lane. If you need to get out of your car, please park in the lot to do so.

  • Please pull forward as far as you can before having your student exit your vehicle on the passenger side.

  • Please use one of our crosswalks when walking through the lot or across the street when approaching the school.

  • Please yield to all buses if you are using the bus lane to drop off your student in the morning. Our buses will always have the right away and will not have time to wait for you to drop your student off if you are in the bus lane when they arrive in the morning.

  • Please use the crosswalks in front and behind the buses after school when picking up your student. Walking between the buses is not the safest way to your student and we need this to stop immediately. We have created a cross walk behind the buses to help with this process.

Evacuation Drill:

Our first evacuation “Fire” drill was successfully completed on Friday morning. Students and staff did a tremendous job evacuating the building as quickly and as safely as they could. We were able to evacuate the building and account for all students and staff in less than ten minutes which will always be our goal. Please let us know if you are ever interested in participating in any of our safety drills that we practice at Padilla Elementary!

School Meals and Free/Reduced Meal Applications

Last year all students were able to eat breakfast and lunch for free thanks to a waiver from the USDA waivers. Unfortunately those waivers are expiring. But many students are still eligible for free or reduced cost meals! Applications for free/reduced meals can be found here! Even if you've previously applied, new applications are required each year, so please make sure to fill out an application!

Paying for Breakfast and Lunches

If you need to add money to your child's account for breakfast or lunch, you can do so by paying online, or bringing cash or a check to the school. Click here for more information!

Attendance

Attendance is an important piece of helping your child be successful at school! Please help us give your child every chance to succeed by getting them to school on time, every day, unless they are sick.

How sick is too sick to come to school? Click here to see the guidance we use from the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment.

If your child will be out of school, please be sure to call our attendance line at 303-655-5111.

Teachers begin to walk students into the school starting at 7:45 AM each morning. If your child arrives after that time, they will need to enter the building through the main doors at the front of the building.

School begins at 7:50 AM. If you child arrives after 7:50 AM, they will need to be signed in at the main office.

Checking Students Out Early

If you need to check your student out from school prior to the end of the school day, please note that the office will no longer call them down prior to your arrival. Once you arrive at school to pick up you child we will call them down to the office for you. This will allow us to keep students in class for as long as possible, because every minute matters!

Walking Group

Are you interested in helping to form a group of students to walk to school together? Please reach out to Annieka Vargas at 303-710-9711!
