AHS Junior News
Fall 2021, Vol. 1
Hello Junior Students and Parents!
Mrs. Forbes
Students can now check grades online through Student Portal
We have rolled out StudentPortal for all high school students at Abernathy ISD. This will allow students to check their grades and absences as they are updated by their teacher.
The link to StudentPortal is saved on the high school students' Chrome bookmark bar under the folder "AHS Bookmarks." It is also on the HS website under the "Students" menu.
Students, if you'd like to set up your account, click this link, choose the "Create Account" tab, and input your student ID, birthdate and last four of your social security.
From there, you will be asked to create a username/password, and create 3 security questions (keep those on hand in case you need them in the future-I recommend a screenshot stored in a private location). Once you've completed these steps, you will have access to view your grades and attendance!
**Parents, if you don't have a parent portal account and would like to create one, please contact Mrs. Kemp in the high school office - (806)298-2563.
Upcoming Tests (And Their Purpose)
PSAT - Wednesday, October 13th
On October 13th, Abernathy High School will administer the PSAT/NMSQT (Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test). This test, generated by the College Board, serves two purposes:
1) It is a practice test for the SAT, one of two college entrance exams that can be used to gain admission into four year colleges as well as college scholarships. Students will usually take the SAT or ACT in the spring of junior year and into senior year so the PSAT gives them a good look at what the SAT will be like.
2) For 11th graders, it is used to identify National Merit Scholars and award merit scholarships.
Our school will pay for all 11th graders to take the PSAT/NMSQT.
I encourage you to practice before PSAT day! You can practice here:
https://collegereadiness.collegeboard.org/psat-nmsqt-psat-10/practice.
Juniors also received a PSAT Study Guide Booklet that will be a great help in preparing.
ASVAB Career Inventory Assessment - Tuesday, November 2nd
The ASVAB assessment is a great career exploration instrument. This test is a valuable tool to help your student with his/her future educational and career plans. This tool will help students:
—Learn more about themselves and the world of work.
—Explore occupations in line with their interests & skills.
—Develop an effective strategy to realize their career and educational goals.
—Determine eligibility for a military career if interested in this pathway.
Although used for military enlistment, the ASVAB is a great way for Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors to identify their career interests and abilities.
STAAR EOC Retests
Here are the dates for each test:
Tuesday, December 7th - English 1
Wednesday, December 8th - Algebra 1 and Biology
Thursday, December 9th - English 2
Friday, December 10th - US History
If you are in U.S. History class this year, you will take that STAAR test in May. Passing these EOC tests is a graduation requirement.

Building Resilience through Adversity
Let's be honest. The last couple of years have been tough for our society as a whole and especially for teenagers. We have dealt with health and social effects of COVID. We have watched our country experience great division, which can be really discouraging. And this is on top of whatever challenges and struggles you are facing personally on a daily basis. It is not an easy time to be a teenager.
BUT...going through challenges is an opportunity to build RESILIENCE. Resilience is the ability to adapt well or "bounce back" in the face of hard times. Resilience is not just something you are born with. It can be learned. And as you build resilience, you are building yourself a stronger and more hopeful future!
Take a quick look at these articles for more tips on how to build resilience.
You, my friend, can do hard things! Dream It...Believe It...Achieve It!
