Happy Thanksgiving, Cougars!
Dear Cougar Family,
Thanksgiving is a time of tradition and gathering with those we love--whether family, friends, or both. When I think back to my strongest childhood memories of Thanksgiving, I remember two distinct settings: my Grandma's gathering on the Richburg side and going to MeMe's on the Rutherford side. Grandma made biscuits from scratch three meals a day, so needless to say, I recall delicious food spread out on a long table and lots of laughter from my "big cousins" and aunts and uncles. I remember how it felt to be there most of all: happy and well-loved.
At MeMe's house, the food varied from year to year. My most distinct memory is the year that she ordered a meal from a caterer in Abilene. I didn't even know what a caterer was until that day. We ate on the fancy dishes and thought about what Thanksgiving should taste like...my Grandma's dressing. There was one part of the day at MeMe's that was always my favorite, though. We would all write down 5 things we were thankful for on little slips of paper. Then we would take turns reading them aloud and guessing who wrote each thing, pretending not to recognize one another's handwriting. I remember how it felt to be seated at the table all together: happy and well-loved.
Now, our Rutherford family Thanksgiving is a combination of our childhood memories--as Mom makes Grandma's dressing recipe, always saying it is not as good as Grandma's was, and we commit the yearly ritual of writing "thankful-fors." I wonder what my kids will remember from this. I am hoping it is the feeling of being happy and well-loved.
As we move toward the Thanksgiving holidays, please take a minute to make sure that each of our Cougars leaves for the break with that same feeling of being happy and well-loved.
Some students will be secretly dreading 5 days off from school as we are the stable adults in their lives. School is where they know they will be warm and well-fed. Please advertise our Food Pantry. We are ready to send students home with food for the break! Also know that when it is time for me to write my "thankful-fors" you all and our 1,997 Cougars will be in my list. Thank you for all you do every day.
Have a fantastic week! And, as always, COUGAR PRIDE!
