A Message From Our Principal
Dear Springfield Elementary School Families,
November is going to be a busy and exciting month for Springfield Elementary! Our fourth grade and Chorus & Drama students will begin our month with their musical performance, “Music, the Heartbeat of America”, on Tuesday, November 7, at 6:30 pm. We greatly appreciate the hard work and time these students and Mrs. Kawakami have put into preparing for the show. We look forward to the performance!
We are also very much looking forward to our Literacy Night which will be held on Tuesday, November 14. This will be a great event to learn more about literacy instruction and what your children are learning. Pizza and drinks will be for sale beginning at 5:45 with the first session beginning at 6:15. There will be three total sessions offered with the last one ending at 7:25. The book fair will also be open from 4-6 pm. Please see the Flyer distributed via Peachjar or visit our website for further information.
Another important event that I would like to encourage you to attend is a Parenting Series, “Keeping Your Children Safe on the Internet” on Thursday, November 9, at 6:30 pm at Springfield Elementary. This event is offered to all elementary school parents in the Fort Mill School District and is hosted by FMSD Elementary School Counselors. FBI Agent John Letterhos from the Charlotte Division will be presenting. This is a very worthwhile and important topic that I encourage you to learn more about.
I wanted to share some great news that we had a 3-D printer donated to SES! With the help of one of our parents, she was able to arrange for a 3-D printer to be donated. We are very appreciative of this donation and are excited about the learning opportunities it may provide our students. This donation will also allow the PTA funds raised through Boosterthon to be allocated to other needs. We are extremely grateful for this wonderful donation!
Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. I am happy to help. I wish you and your family a safe and Happy Thanksgiving Holiday!

Important Update!
We would like to clarify information pertaining to Personal Items at School, found in our Student Handbook on page 7,regarding wrist watches that can be used as cell phones. Administration does treat the wristwatch that can receive or make phone calls and/or text messages to be a cell phone. Students may wear the watch to school; however, it must remain in the students backpack during the school day.

Technology: Technology is in the middle of Digital Citizenship. While some of the concepts are difficult for our little ones we want to start early getting them to understand and build good habits early. I encourage you to go to Common Sense Media (https://www.commonsensemedia.org/) and review the parent information about Digital Citizenship.
Notes from the Nurse
The fall and winter months for many are a busy time of year with many fun events planned for the holidays or spending time with family. It is also a time of year that can be stressful. Children can be stressed too and can especially be aware of their parents’ stress. According to the American Psychology Association website, children “may find it difficult to recognize and verbalize when they are experiencing stress. For children, stress can manifest itself through changes in behavior. Common changes can include acting irritable or moody, withdrawing from activities that used to give them pleasure, routinely expressing worries, complaining more than usual about school, crying, displaying surprising fearful reactions, clinging to a parent or teacher, sleeping too much or too little, or eating too much or too little.” Stress can also manifest as physical symptoms such as a headache or stomachache. If you feel your child may be stressed, it can be a great time to talk about it as a family. If you are concerned and need support with helping your child cope with stress never hesitate to reach out to your child’s pediatrician, guidance counselor, school nurse or teacher.

Red Bag
The PTA is gearing-up to make the Holiday Season extra special for some local kids who could use a hand-up. Parents, make your list of chores. Your children will be coming home in November to offer their assistance - in return for a few cents or dollars to donate to the Red Bag Campaign. We will be collecting donations from Wednesday, November 8th to Friday November 17th.
We are running desperately low on wrapping paper and tape. If you find paper in your closets from years past, or wouldn't mind purchasing a roll or two, the PTA would greatly appreciate any donations prior to December 1st. Please bring wrapping paper and/or tape donations to Mrs. Baird in the front office.
