Billing/Coding Assistant

OverviewPosition Summary:
Is responsible for entering and coding patient services into the practice management. Generates invoices to be sent to insurances and to patients. Sorts and files paperwork, handles insurance claims and performs collections duties.
This position will work with the practice patients and clinical teams to accurately and completely code and prepare charges to be sent out for the patient’s visit.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Translates patient information into alphanumeric medical code
Reviews note prepared by physician and ensures that no mistakes are made in those notes
Contacts physician if information is missing and gets that filled in an/or corrected
Makes sure all medical record files are complete and duly signed.
Collects, posts and managed patient account payments
Submits claims to insurances
Maintains strict confidentiality
Codes patient services and enters into practice management system
Sorts and files paperwork
Ensures healthcare facilities are reimbursed for all procedures
Handles information about patient treatment, diagnosis and related procedures to ensure proper coding
Knows several different coding systems, including Level 1 HCPCS, Level 2 HCPCS, ICD-9 & ICD-10
Follows up to see if claim is accepted or rejected
Investigates rejected claim to see why denial was issued
Utilizes EHR for any documentation needed to support coding of a claim

Qualifications:
High School Diploma, Bachelor’s degree in Health Care Administration, Business, Medical Assisting OR equivalent experience
Certificate or Diploma for an Accredited Program in Medical Coding
Minimum of 1 year of experience in health care
Strong background in customer service
Competencies in the areas of leadership, teamwork and cooperation
Strong ethics and a high level of personal and professional integrity
An effective communicator at all levels in the organization, with strong oral, written and persuasive skills
