Bonillas Traditional Magnet School
September Monthly Newsletter
From Ms. Ambrosio
We are off to a great start of the school year. Thank you to everyone who came out and joined us for our Open House on August 16th and our first Family Movie Night on August 24th. Having families is a wonderful way for us to keep the home to school communication strong. Please consider joining us for as many events as you can this year.
September is Attendance Awareness month in TUSD. Our goal is to have students here at school and on time whenever possible. Please make sure if your child is going to be out that you notify our office by calling Mrs. Hanna our attendance clerk, so she can excuse the absences. We review absences and tardies quarterly and will begin to send letters and notices to students that we have a concern about. Chronic absenteeism, is defined by the state of Arizona and TUSD Policy as missing more than 10% of the school year. For the first quarter that means if a student has missed more than 5 days of school, its considered excessive. Together we can ensure students are at school and ready to learn daily whenever possible.
As we move into September and the end of the 1st quarter draws near (it will be here before you know it) i want to encourage you to reach out to your child's teacher if you have questions or concerns regarding your child's social or academic progress. A wonderful opportunity to have this communication is during our upcoming parent teacher conferences September 12-14th. If you don't have a conference scheduled with your child's teacher, please contact them ASAP to schedule on.
We look forward to another great month of learning and growth!
Ms. Jennifer Ambrosio
From the Office
Also, please help us to make arrangements for after school with your child before they come to school when at all possible. We have been receiving a lot of phone calls asking us to give students messages during the school day, which we can do, but it does interrupt instruction which is not something we want to do. Also if you do have to change arrangements please notify us as soon as possible. When we get called after 2:30 to deliver a message it becomes difficult because students and teachers are wrapping up lessons, preparing homework for the end of the day and messages very close to the end of the day are hard to relay. Thank you for your help with this.
Student Council
Coming soon you will get information about our annual Fall Cookie Dough Fundraiser which is sponsored by student council and will begin at the end of September. Look our for more details!
Family Events
This month we have several opportunities for parents to be involved. First up is on Wednesday September 12th from 9:00-10:00 am, we will have a 1st quarter parent workshop, hosted by Mrs. Miranda Garica, our Curriculum Service Provider, and Ms. Christine Voelkel, our Magnet Coordinator. The focus of this workshop will be on the history and background of Bonillas Traditional Magnet School, and parents will have an opportunity to learn about the things that make our school a unique place, including our 6 character pillars. Please plan to join us for this adult learning opportunity.
Next if you are interested in volunteering to support our school our Library Assistant Ms. Abir Zihri wants to hear from you! Our Fall Book Fair will be held September 10-14th and she is looking for parent volunteers to assist. Please contact Ms. Zihri at 520-232-6624 or at abir.zihri@tusd1.org to find out how you can help. I also hope that everyone will take time to come visit our book fair during this week. The book fair will be open Monday and Tuesday from 8:00-8:30, and again after school from 2:45-3:30 and Wednesday - Friday from 8:00-8:30 and 11:45-3:30! Stop by while you are at the school for your parent teacher conference. All proceeds from the book fair go directly back to our school library to purchase new books for students.
Lastly on Wednesday September 26, 2018 from 5:00-7:00 pm we will have our Fall Peter Piper Pizza Fundraiser, at the Peter Piper Pizza on Broadway across from Park Place Mall. Flyers will be sent home and when you go that night to Peter Piper with your family, bring the flyer and our school gets 15% of the proceeds from all food, beverage and token sales during those hours. There are also lots of fun games and excitement ready to go, so please plan to join us for this event.

News from TUSD Food Services
Sept. 13 is the prior year meal benefit status expiration date. This means, if a student qualified for free or reduced meals last school year, 2017-2018, (based off of a household income application), that application status expires on Sept. 13. If a new application is not submitted the student loses the free or reduced meal benefit from last year’s application and becomes paid status (until a new application is submitted). Families need to submit a new application prior to Sept. 13. The sooner the better so it gets processed well before the deadline.
Only one application per household needs to be submitted (all children are listed on one application even if they attend different schools). If you need online access to complete you application, you can visit the school and use our family computer between the hours of 10:00 and 1:00 pm, to submit an online application. The processing time frame is much faster than a paper application. Paper applications are available in each school kitchen or at our main Food Services office (2150 E. 15th Street 85719). Parents can also call our main line at 225-4700 and our staff can complete an online application over the phone rather than submitting a paper application.
Online application for Free/Reduced Meals (this online link can also be accessed from the School Meals link on the main district website).
Clothing and Shoe Vouchers
We still have a limited supply of vouchers available for families for uniforms and shoes. One voucher and shoe gift card per child are allowed. If you are in need, please visit the Bonillas Office and ask about receiving the vouchers. Legal parent/guaridan must sign for the voucher and return all receipts to the office.
Get connected to ParentVue
ParentVue is an online feature TUSD offers for parents to get access to their student’s information online. You can check grades, attendance, bus routes, and when registration time comes up you need this account to register your students online for the new school. Beginning the 19-20 school year, registration will be online ONLY, so be sure you are set up for ParentVue today. You will need your access code, which you can get in person by visiting the office or request it to be mailed to your home address.
