What is the Digestive System?
The digestive system is a series of 16 organs all working together in ones body, in both chemical and physical ways, to process food, absorb nutrients, and dispose of wastes.
1) Salivary Glands(chemical)
The salivary glands are located in the mouth and produce saliva to keep the mouth and the rest of the digestive system organs moist.
2) Teeth(physical)
The teeth are used to crush up food, to be distributed to the upcoming digestive organs.
3) Pharynx
The Pharynx, also commonly known as the throat, receives the food from the mouth, sending it to the Esophagus.
4) Esophagus
The Esophagus's purpose is to transport food, liquids, and saliva to the stomach from the mouth.
5) Stomach(Physical&Chemical)
The stomachs purpose is to churn the food and substances in it, physically breaking the food down. Stomach acids and enzymes are released to chemically break the substances down.
6) Liver
The liver's function in the digestive system is one of great importance, an enzyme known as bile is created within the liver, contributing to the digestion of fats, etc...
7) Pancreas(chemical)
The pancreas produces enzymes and hormones that are crucial to the process of digestion.
8) Gallbladder
The gallbladder is used to store and concentrate the digestive enzyme known as, bile.
9) Duodenem
This is the first and shortest segment of the small intestine, it receives digested food and is the first segment to absorb nutrients.
10) Jejunum
This is the second section of the small intestine, full of villi, that absorb most of the newly digested nutrients.
11) Illium
The Illium is the final portion of the small intestine, finalizing all absorption of the remaining nutrients.
12) Cecum
The main purpose of the Cecum is to absorb remaining salts and fluids, such as water.
13) Colon
The role of the colon is to reabsorb fluids and process waste products in preparation for its distribution out of the body.
14) Appendix
The function of this small organ in the lower right abdomen is unknown.
15) Rectum
The rectum is the last straight part of the large intestine before the reaching of the angus.
16) Anus
