Teacher and Student Support
As teachers and students need support, Breaux and Cofield will work together to assist. Just a reminder that we try very hard to refrain from the counselor playing a disciplinary role, as it is her job to counsel students. If a disciplinarian, this role becomes blurred and relationships needed for counseling break down.
Also just a reminder that when seeking support for students, it is imperative to be confidential about the information. This includes making sure conversations about the student happen in a private location, not out in the hallway or in a classroom full of students where other students, or even adults, can hear. Thank you all for working together for the needs of our students!
The Virginia Beach Aquarium visited our Pre-K classes on Feb. 22nd. Special sea creatures were honorary classmates for the day!

"REACHING EVEN THE MOST CHALLENGING STUDENTS"
February 25, 2019
by Adam Bellow
Reaching Even the Most Challenging Students
Nearly every teacher has had at least one student who just doesn’t seem engaged. Maybe they’re bored with school, or they’re focused on challenges at home—or maybe they lack the confidence to even try.
Doing a Breakout EDU game is a great way to wrap up an instructional unit. Rather than end with a 30-question multiple choice test after a history lesson on Lewis and Clark, I might have students work together to solve a game using the knowledge they’ve acquired over the course of the unit.
Teaching Collaborative Problem Solving
As an elementary teacher responsible for multiple subject areas, Piercey appreciates the cross-curricular nature of the Breakout EDU games. For example, in one game, students read a poem that refers to area and perimeter. The students must infer that they’re supposed to calculate the area and perimeter of another object they find in the game, and the numbers they get are the combination to a locked box.
By working together to complete these challenges, students aren’t just reinforcing their core curricular knowledge; they’re also learning collaborative problem solving skills that will benefit them in whatever field they choose.
“The biggest thing I think they get out of Breakout EDU is learning how to work well with others. For many students, this is the first time they’ve had to think critically, work with others, and listen to others. And I’ve found this is where many students realize they have leadership abilities that they didn’t know they had.”
Nontraditional Learning
Breakout EDU shows students that learning doesn’t have to be accomplished by sitting in chairs and taking in information, this hands-on, student-centered, problem-based approach to instruction can engage even the most challenging students.

Growth Mindset and Student Achievement
At this point in the year as you are reflecting on student achievement, it is important to shift the change to the adult. "How can I help grow this student?" instead of "I taught it and they didn't get it." Having a growth mindset doesn't come naturally for most. We all have to remind each other and support one another with positive language that will result in positive outcomes. We got this!
