General News! Week of Nov.27th- Dec. 1st
Welcome Back !
We hope you all had an enjoyable Thanksgiving Break, and your children were able to recharge themselves for the final weeks of this semester. Remember these next three weeks will go by quickly, and their assignments must all be completed and turned in before Winter Break.
We saw many students who were able to complete their Hurricane Irma make-up work. Great job! However we still have a number of students who have not completed these assignments. Remember these are graded assignments for this quarter. All work must be completed and turned in by this Friday, December 1st.
Thursday After School, will be back in full swing this Thursday afternoon. Please remember your child must have a signed permission slip in order to stay, as well as an indication of how they will be getting home. We have had a number of students who are attempting to stay and want to tell us that their parents know they are here. This is not acceptable, and we will no longer make calls or attempts to find out if this is true or not. Also a quick reminder that the new pick-up for 8th graders is around the back of the building, in the bus loop. Pick up is at 3:45. Thank you for being prompt!

Language Arts- Ms. Waxman
This Week in Language Arts!
With our basic background knowledge of the Civil War in place, today we began our latest novel Behind Rebel Lines, by Seymour Reit. This is the true story of Emma Edmonds, a Civil War spy who fooled the rebels---and her own troops!
Students will have a wide variety of writing assignments that will go along with this novel study. They will be working on daily annotations, a radio broadcast script (which they will use their research to write and present some of the key battles and events of the Civil War to the class) journal entries based on Emma's adventures, and a narrative about the adventures of some of the other women spies of the time.
Our Narrative Assesslet, which was postponed a few weeks ago will take place next Tuesday,Dec. 5th. This practice test is wonderful for helping students get some writing practice and feedback on their areas of strength, as well as some that may need a little work.
Reading Inventory testing is done. We do still have a few who were absent when this was going on, so hopefully we can wrap them up this week. This assessment helps us see a better picture of where each of the students are with their personal Lexile levels. I will be meeting with students to discuss their personal progress. Please remember that a measure of 1010 is what is considered passing,by the state of Georgia, when determining measures for promotion for 9th grade.
Our current root word set, "All things Great and Small", was introduced today, and will be tested on next Thursday. A link for a STUDYSTACK is in Google Classroom. Students should be working on these independently at home.
Hopefully the holiday break provided some extra reading time. Our 3rd and final Choice Reading book for this quarter will be due by December 8th.
We have completed seven weeks of TweenTribune. These are to be completed each week by Friday afternoon at 3pm. These two independent reading practice assignments are the only assignments that students need to be completing outside of my classroom. This consistent practice will help students build up the reading endurance that they will need for high school and beyond, as well as to increase their Lexile levels.
Thanks for all you do at home! Enjoy your week!
Science- Mrs. Madera
Physical Science
Our current topic is Energy! Today students focused on reviewing Potential and Kinetic Energy and the Law of Conservation of Energy. Students began calculating Potential and Kinetic Energy of various objects at various heights. Students will have a quiz on Potential and Kinetic Energy and the Law of Conservation of Energy this week. Tomorrow we will be starting Heat Energy Transfers through convection, conduction, and radiation. Students will conduct multiple rotational lab activities this week focusing on these vocabulary terms.
Our Mastery Assessment and Notebook Check is scheduled for Thursday, December 14th.
Science homework will be to review notes and vocabulary every night.
The Energy Vocabulary for this unit can be found by visiting my Quizlet link below.

Mr. Frazier
Team 8-2 Mathematics will begin our study of the Pythagorean Theorem. The Pythagorean Theorem is a fundamental relationship in geometry among the three sides of a right triangle. It states that the square of the hypotenuse (the side opposite the right angle) is equal to the sum of the squares of the other two sides. The equation is a2 + b2 = c2. We will use this theorem to solve problems that involve missing sides of right triangles.
