Geography of Southern Africa

1. Namib Desert
The Namib Desert has hot temperatures. It is on the coast of southern Africa. Few people live here, yet there are several animal species. This area is important because it is a habitat of a few animals that don't live in the U.S.
2. Cape of Good Hope
The Cape of Good Hope is a cape at the very south-western tip of Africa. If you were to walk all the way to the farthest south-west you can on Africa, you would be at the Cape of Good Hope. It is important because it marks the point of sailing more eastward than southward if you are sailing around the tip of Africa.
3. Johannesburg
Johannesburg, by population, is the largest city in South Africa. In fact, it is also the world's largest city not set up on a river, lake, or coastline. It is important because it is the capital of the province Gauteng, which is the wealthiest province in South Africa.
Zambezi River
The Zambezi River is the fourth largest river in Africa. It is 1,599 miles long, and is in Zambia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Angola, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, and Tanzania. It is important because it provides hydroelectric power for humans.
5. Limpopo River
The Limpopo River is a river in southern Africa. It has a couple of sources, which are the Crocodile River and the Marico River. The Limpopo River is also the second longest river in Africa, behind the Nile River. This river (the Limpopo) is important because it supplies many Africans with water.
6. Lusaka
Lusaka is the capital as well as the largest city in Zambia. It is also one of the fastest developing cities in Southern Africa. It is the center for the government in Zambia. This city is important because it not only supports many Africans with jobs, but it also is the center for the Zambian government.
7. Kalahari Desert
The Kalahari Desert is a desert in southern Africa. It covers 350,000 square miles. It supports more plants and animals than a true desert would. This land form is important because it helps provide a habitat for many animals and plants to live in.
8. Cabinda
Cabinda (exclave) is a city in Africa. It was formerly known as Portuguese Congo. This city is important because it provides and supports jobs for a large number of Africans.
9. Orange River
The Orange River is one of the longest rivers in Africa. It passes through only three major cities. This mighty river is important to Africa because it brings water to the poor Africans living in Africa.
10. Victoria Falls
Victoria Falls is a waterfall in southern Africa. It is also the largest waterfall in the world. This spectacular land form is important because it brings in tourism money to Africa.
