Principal's Message
As we are coming up on the one year anniversary of Distance Learning, I want to thank our community for their hard work and dedication to educating our students. We are blessed to have amazing parents supporting their children each and every day (I know this hasn't been easy). Our students have been doing their best with the situation, showing up each day to class and submitting assignments. Our teachers have been outstanding in providing wonderful lessons, meaningful activities, and going above and beyond to help students. I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for your support during this time.
I hope that you have registered for the Niles Rotary Spring Fling event for Saturday, March 20th. This is a free fundraising event that will directly benefit the students at Harvey Green. Please register today!
Recently, our Superintendent sent out a very important newsletter that included a survey regarding the return to school that was due on Saturday, March 6th. If you have not submitted the survey please do so immediately. Also, be sure to read his emails for more information about the return to campus.
Please be sure to read this entire newsletter as there is a lot of important information that you will find below.
As always, if you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to reach out to me.
Sincerely,
Ms. Johnson

The Niles Rotary Club of Fremont will host a FREE "Spring Fling" virtual fundraising event to benefit three local elementary schools, including ours! Funds raised will be used to purchase new Chromebooks for students.
The "Spring Fling" fundraiser will have a fun "Laugh In" theme and will take place online on Saturday, March 20, 2021, from 6:30-7:30 pm. The FREE one-hour event will include entertainment, silent and live auctions, and so much more. The total fundraising goal is $60,000 which will be disbursed between the following elementary schools: Azevada, Harvey Green, and Oliveira.
To ensure fundraising success, I ask that you support this effort in any way you can. I suggest you attend the event and, if you're able, donate a silent auction item, sponsor the event, or donate funds. Full details on ways you can support this fundraiser are at www.fremontspringfling.com.

You can call the school at (510) 656- 6438, and press 7 which is the attendance mail box. Slowly and clearly spell your child's first and last name, room number or teacher and the reason for the absence. The mail box is accessible 24 hours a day. You may also contact the office directly by email at vluna@fusdk12.net. If the school does not receive a call then the absence will be recorded as an unexcused absence.
ELPAC
The Summative English Language Proficiency Assessments for California, or “Summative ELPAC,” is the test used to measure how well students understand English when it is not the language they speak at home. Information from the ELPAC tells your child’s teacher about the areas in which your child needs extra support.
This spring, your child will take the Summative ELPAC.
Students in kindergarten through grade twelve who are classified as English learners will take the Summative ELPAC every year until they are reclassified as proficient in English. Students are tested on their skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Your child’s voice is being recorded as part of the Speaking test. A small percentage of student responses will be used to validate the accuracy of scoring and will not be used for identification. All recorded responses will be destroyed after the scores are validated.
You are an important part of your child’s education. To help your child get ready for the test, you can:
∙ Read to your child, or have them read to you on a regular basis.
∙ Use pictures and ask your child to tell you what they see, or what is happening in each picture.
∙ Provide your child with opportunities to use language outside of school.
∙ Talk with your child’s teacher about your child’s listening, speaking, reading and writing skills to help support their progress.
To learn more about the ELPAC, go to the California Department of Education Parent Guides to Understanding Web page at https://www.cde.ca.gov/ta/tg/ca/parentguidetounderstand.asp
You also can look at sample test questions on the practice tests, which can be found on the ELPAC Web site at https://www.elpac.org/resources/practicetests/.
If you have any questions about your child taking the ELPAC, please contact: Ms. Johnson, Green Principal at tjohnson@fusdk12.net
Counselor's Corner with Ms. Huang
Hello Green Families,
As we're beginning to have warmer days and spring is soon to come, maybe you're noticing your children appear less motivated to work and tired of being indoors. Some of us adults can probably also relate! How can we encourage our children and help them have growth mindsets? We recently held a parent workshop that covers these topics. In case you missed it, we're including the recording and slide deck here, feel free to check them out! Children learn through example; teach them by modeling growth mindset. Practice using growth mindset language around your children. For example, "I don't know how to do this YET, but I will" and instill the idea that even when things get hard or when we make a mistake, we don't give up. We learn and we grow. Fostering a growth mindset also means we want to encourage the effort rather than the result as this helps them build confidence toward future challenges and teaches them to reflect on the process and actions that lead them to the outcome.
Kindest regards,
Ms. Huang
Library News
I'm excited to introduce Junior Library Guild Digital. This is an eBook subscription. Thanks to Harvey Green PTA, I got a discount on this service (because I have JLG Print Book Subscriptions funded by our wonderful PTA).
Here's how your child can read eBooks from JLG.
Go to JLG Digital.
They'll put new eBooks every 30 - 90 days.
They do not need to sign in to read these eBooks. By signing in, they can make notes, bookmarks, or highlights in the books. Also, I might purchase single-user eBooks in the future if the titles are popular. They'll need to sign in to read those eBooks.
To sign in:
Username: [first 3 letters of first name][first 3 letters of last name][last 3 digits of student ID]
Password: [whole student ID]
Example
John Smith (ID: 42875)
Username: johsmi875
Password: 42875
This is the same as they login to Destiny to read eBooks from Harvey Green Library or request/hold books for checkouts, so they should be familiar with it.
If you don't know the student ID, it's on the report card. Or you can ask your teacher.
