HELP! I'm A Mainstream Teacher
AND All My Students Don't Speak English
The English Learner Population in South Carolina Continues to GROW!
Did you know there are OVER 50,000 students in South Carolina and English is not their first language? If you are a mainstream teacher the chances of you teaching one of these students is very possible.
Would you like to learn strategies to help you in the content areas? Would you like to learn how to make assessments authentic? Are non-English speaking parents and community members involved in your classroom/school? Remember, it takes a village!
Join us for the SCDE Title III Fall Institute in Charleston, October 12-14, 2016 where all of these questions will be answered in depth through meaningful, interactive workshops.
Hands On Learning Makes English Comprehensible
This lively session includes background on Foldables-interactive, research-based, hands-on graphic organizers-and their uses, research behind Foldables, and relevant ELL strategies. The session is 90% hands-on, with participants creating their own examples as they are led by the presenter throughout the presentation. There is a strong emphasis on vocabulary tools, including Dinah's Visual Kinesthetic Vocabulary (VKV) manipulatives, since vocabulary is the greatest predictor of academic success. Learn how to strengthen skills and create study aids that will enhance student comprehension and engage learners. Participants will leave with multiple examples ready for immediate application.
