Jefferson Elementary's Lunch/Recess Newsletter

Hello Jefferson Community,

Welcome to the 2nd issue of News From the Lunchbox. I want to thank all of the readers of the inaugural issue for your kind words!. I appreciate all of your comments and suggestions and look forward to continuing issues.

Spring has definitely sprung and the last few months have brought lots of fun in the sun and fresh air! Jefferson is so very fortunate to have such beautiful grounds for our students to use and explore. Regardless of the season, the beauty and variety of the ecology offers something for everyone! I would like to thank all the parent volunteers that have given our students the gifts of their time and talents. They have provided our students with so many amazing experiences: from Nature Club, Garden Club, Ultimate Frisbee, to the Singing Club...and the school store recess has been packed with exciting activities for all!

The school year is coming to a close, and summer is right around the corner. However, we are always looking for ways to improve the lunch/recess experience for our students at Jefferson, so if you have any ideas you would like to share or would like to volunteer during the 2016-2017 school year, please feel free to reach out to me at any time. Look out for next school year's Fall issue. Until then, have a relaxing and peaceful summer!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Swyberius

Assistant Principal

Jefferson Rocks Out!

On May 13th, the rain held off just long enough for the Jefferson students to enjoy a lunch-time concert, given by none other than fellow SOMSD students from Mark Murphy's Music! The band consisted of Jefferson's own Alexis Halm on electric guitar and her friends Asha and Amelie on keyboards, vocals, and drums. The girls are called the A-Team. They played several songs during each recess period and the kids absolutely loved it! They drew a large crowd of students who danced and sang along to the popular tracks. The girls were truly amazing in talent and stage presence and we hope they will return to rock out for us again soon!

The School Store Continues to Bring School Spirit and Some Fun Retail Therapy

Thanks to Karen Palaitis and the Jefferson PTA, our students continue to enjoy their once-monthly shopping trips to the Jefferson School Store. The warm weather has enabled us to move the store outside, which makes the shopping experience even more fun as students are able to browse the selections at their leisure and make return trips for additional purchases!

Jefferson Raises Awareness With Our New EPA Air Flag Program

The Air Quality Flag Program assists schools and other organizations to determine how clean or polluted the air is each day, by checking the Air Quality Index (AQI). The AQI is updated daily and indicates a color that is aligned to a certain level of air quality in your area for that day. Jefferson checks the AQI daily and announces the air quality each day to our students and staff. Brightly color colored flags are flown in front of the school to indicate the air quality level for each day. Green stands for good air quality, yellow stands for moderate air quality and orange stands for unhealthy air quality for sensitive groups of people. We have been participating in the program for several months now and are happy to report that we only experienced one orange day. Most days have been green with a few yellow days!
