A Message from the Principal
October is filled with many great events here at school. Our PTC (Parent Teacher Committee) has planned our Fun Run, Trunk or Treat, and is already working towards other great events throughout the school year! All parents are welcome to join us at our meetings. Thank you to all of our families for supporting our fundraising efforts with our Fun Run! Money is still coming in, but so far we have raised over $20,000! Thanks to the businesses who sponsored us, all of our students will be receiving new grade-level shirts. Each grade is assigned a specific color. Students will get their shirts the morning of the Fun Run (October 8th).
This past month, you probably heard your child mention some form of assessment. All of our students were assessed in the areas of reading and math using the NWEA assessment. Students in 3rd-5th Grade were also assessed in Language. In addition, all students are being tested for their guided reading levels or GRL. Teachers use the data from these assessments to help drive our instruction, as well as to plan for interventions to help students keep making growth. You will receive specific results for your child at mid-marking reports, which will come home the week of November 1st. At that time, we will also be scheduling parent-teacher conferences. Conferences will be held over zoom, but parents may request a face-to-face meeting if there is a need that would be better discussed in person. Conferences are on November 3rd and 4th. Teachers will send home sign-up genius links for parents to sign up for a time in the near future.
Please be sure to read below for more detailed information on some of our upcoming events.
Fun Run
Picture Day
Trunk or Treat/Pumpkin Stroll
In addition, families are welcome to carve/decorate pumpkins so that we can line the bus loop with jack-o-lantern luminaries to guide you back to your cars with a "Pumpkin Stroll." Pumpkins can be dropped off at 5pm on October 21st in the bus loop. Any pumpkins left over after 8pm will be discarded, but families are welcome to take their pumpkins home after trunk or treat.
Look for forms coming home soon!
WATCH D.O.G.S.
Attention Carkenord male role models…we are looking for you to be a Watch “DOG” during the 2021-22 school year! Watch D.O.G.S. is a nationally recognized program whose goal includes providing male role models for our students during the school day. Our goal at Carkenord is to invite any special male role models (dads, grandpas, uncles, stepdads) to our school for one day to be a Watch DOG on Wednesdays throughout the school year. The Watch DOG won’t only spend time with his own student(s), but will also spend time in the cafeteria, playground, etc., making connections with other students who may not have male role models in their lives.
The following video clip provides insight as to what the program entails.

Halloween Parties and Parade
Students may wear their costumes to school. Please keep in mind that students will still need to be able to sit at their desks/tables for much of the day. Students will also have lunch and recess. Please do not send students to school with props that depict violence (guns, knives, swords, etc.) Costume masks may not be worn during class time, except during the party and parade.
We will hold a Halloween Parade around the perimeter of the school at 2:15 pm. Parents are welcome spectators during the parade. Parents may stand anywhere around the outside of the building. We will make 2 laps around the school then return inside.
