National Hispanic College Fair Set for November 7
Career Council, Inc. and National Hispanic College Fairs, Inc. will host a college fair for Hispanic youth in Montgomery County on Tuesday, November 7, at the Bohrer Park Community Center, 506 South Frederick Avenue in Gaithersburg. Students should check with their school’s College and Career Center for permission slips and information. The Career Council, Inc. and National Hispanic College Fairs, Inc., serve more than 125,000 students and 1,800 colleges/universities in 50 locations across the nation. NIH HiStep Internship Info Session at Blake, 11/16
In HiSTEP, students spend seven weeks exploring the medical sciences and STEM careers through a variety of activities, including a hands-on laboratory module, research group visits, informational interviews, networking sessions, and discussions on hot topics in science. In addition, students participate in a curriculum that encourages them to get a head start on the college application process.
In HiSTEP 2.0, students spend eight weeks as a summer intern conducting research in a laboratory, working under the mentorship of NIH research scientists and clinicians. In addition, students participate in a curriculum that prepares them for the transition to college.

Superintendent Recommends $1.818 Billion School Construction Plan
Superintendent Jack Smith is recommending a $1.818 billion six-year school construction plan for Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) to address enrollment growth and aging infrastructure. The plan includes 30 capacity projects to address space deficits systemwide, including several new schools and schools addition projects. Read the superintendent’s recommended FY 2019-2024 Capital Improvements Program. Provide comment at the Capital Improvements Program hearings.
Mental Health Fair Set for November 13
As part of School Psychology Awareness Week (November 13‒17), the Montgomery County School Psychologists’ Association is presenting the first School Psychologist Mental Health Fair on Monday, November 13. Students and families are invited to participate as school psychologists from MCPS share skills and information on a variety of topics, including yoga and mindfulness, early childhood development, sleep hygiene, pet therapy, and coping skills. The event will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on November 13 in the Carver Educational Services Center Auditorium, 850 Hungerford Drive in Rockville. Enter at the North Entrance of the building.
ASVAB Career Testing, November 14 at Blake
The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) is an excellent career exploration test that will help students link their skills & aptitudes with related occupations. The ASVAB is required to be admitted into the military, but anyone can take it for career identification purposes without obligation to the armed services. It will be administered to students FREE of charge. The ASVAB is recommended for Juniors and Seniors but sophomores are welcome too.
The ASVAB will be administered at Blake on November 14 beginning at 7:45 a.m. in the cafeteria. The test takes approximately 2 1/2 hours. A signed permission slip needs to be returned to Mrs. Prochnow in the Career Center by November 9.
