Students Go on Blind Dates - With Books!
During the month of February students had the opportunity to go on a blind date - with a library book! We displayed books covered in red and white paper with only a short "dating profile" on the fronts of the books. Students had to choose a book based only on the profile. Once they finished reading the books they came by and filled out a "Read and Tell All" book review. Students who completed a review received a sweet treat!
Speed Dating in the Library
Students from Ms. Jarriel's, Ms. Tepper's, and Mrs. Alewine's classes visited the library during February for classes on speed dating with library books. Tables were labeled with different genres and a variety of books were displayed on each table. Students had three minutes at each table to get to know as many books as possible before they moved on to the next table. Graphic organizers were given to students to use to write down any titles that they may be interested in spending more time with.
Ask and You Shall Receive!
Anne Edge from Garrett Books visited our November 5th faculty meeting with samples of many great non-fiction titles. We purchased those titles that teachers requested. Come by the library and take a look!
Additions to the Library Collection
We added 218 copies to the collection in February. See the full list here
Manga Shakespeare - Macbeth
"Double double, toil and trouble, fire burn and cauldron bubble . . ." So say the eerie trio of witches in Shakespeare's Macbeth, a story full of ghosts, witches, bloody ambition, and nonstop action. After Macbeth hears the witches' prophecy that he will be king, he will stop at nothing to make it so. Vividly adapted using Shakespeare's own words in the fast-paced and immediate style of manga, Macbeth is the perfect addition to the Manga Shakespeare series—ideal for students and manga fans alike.
Monkey Wars by Richard Kurti
Sustain the weak. Destroy the strong. A dark fable in the vein of Animal Farm, Watership Down, and The Wave, this action-packed page-turner is told entirely from the monkeys' points of view and shines a light on the politics of power, the rise of tyrants, and the personal dilemmas that must be faced when your life is on the line.
When rhesus monkeys are brutally massacred on the dusty streets of Kolkata by a troop of power-hungry langur monkeys, Mico, a privileged langur, becomes entangled in the secrets at the heart of his troop's leadership and is shocked at what he discovers. He feels compelled to help the few surviving rhesus, especially Papina, a young female he befriends, even though doing so goes against everything he's been taught. As more blood is spilled, Mico realizes that choosing between right and wrong won't be easy.

What Impact Does Mental Illness Have on Violent Crime? by Patricia D. Netzley
The In Controversy series examines the complex, controversial issues of the day by breaking them into smaller pieces. By studying a specific issues, for example the ethics of embryonic stem cell research, rather the entire stem cell research debate, students gain a more solid and focused understanding of a topic as a whole. Each book in the series provides a clear, insightful discussion of the issues, integrating facts and a variety of contrasting opinions for a solid, balanced perspective. Personal accounts and direct quotes from academic and professional experts, advocacy groups, politicians, and others enhance the narrative. Sidebars add depth to the discussion by expanding on important ideas and events. For quick reference, a list of key facts concludes every chapter. Source notes, an annotated organizations list, bibliography, and index provide students researchers with additional tools for papers and class discussion.
