John Brown
John Brown was an abolitionist who decided to protest violently. He led a raid on the United States arsenal. His raid was unsuccessful. He was hanged for his actions.
Harriet Tubman
Harriet Tubman was an escaped slave who led the Under Ground Railroad. She led over 300 slaves to freedom. She made about 30-70 trips by foot to the North and back to the South. She is one of the most famous abolitionists ever.
Frederick Douglass
Frederick Douglass taught himself how to read and write while he was still a slave. He escaped and became an abolitionist. He published an anti-slavery newspaper. He encouraged president Lincoln to let African Americans fight in the war.
Sojourner Truth
Sojourner Truth was the first African American woman to be an anti-slavery speaker. She had a powerful speaking style. she always drew large crowds.
William Lloyd Garrison
William was publisher of the Liberator. The Liberator was an anti-slavery news paper. He used this news paper to tell everyone that slavery was wrong and should be abolished.
Harriet Beecher Stowe
Harriet was the author of Uncle Tom's Cabin. This book became a best seller and was a big hit. It also let people know how cruel slavery was.
