November 13, 2017
Dear parents,
As we start the second quarter, please continue to check power school from our new school website or app.
ENGLISH
6th Grade: This week, students will get their fourth spelling sets, which we will study throughout the week. We learned about the homophones there, their, and they’re last week, and we will continue to practice using them correctly. Students will have a quiz on contractions on Thursday or Friday. We will continue our reading of The Graveyard Book (we’re getting close to the end!).
7th Grade: This week, students will get their fourth spelling sets, which we will study throughout the week. Some students will need to make corrections and re-take last week’s quiz on simple, compound, and complex sentences. We will expand our use of each sentence structure this week as we read and respond to Touching Spirit Bear.
8th Grade: We are continuing our study of Mythology this week. Students have turned in another revision of the hero essays and the top ten will be submitted for competition next week. Unfortunately, they do not notify us of the winners until March. We have also started using commonlit.org and students will have weekly assignments to complete.
SOCIAL STUDIES
6th Grade: We’re wrapping up our study of elevation in South America with one final part about the Incas. We are watching The Great Inca Rebellion (PBS: Nova) and we’ll be unwrapping our Inca mummy bundle models. We will also be moving north to explore countries in Central America and the early civilizations that developed there- Maya and Aztec.

8th Grade: This week we started to learn about the early years of our nation, including the Judiciary Act of 1789 which established how the court system was set up. Students participated in a mock jury trial today and we’ll finish it on Monday. The “Prosecutor” and “Defense Attorney” found out there is a lot of work in preparing for the trial.

6th Grade: 6th graders have been working with fractions. Last week we learned how to multiply different forms of fractions and this week we will add and subtract different forms of fractions.
7th Grade: 7th graders are continuing to work on unit rates and constant rates of change. Several students still need to finish corrections from last week’s test. There will be a quiz on Friday.
8th Grade: We will be finding slopes and y-intercepts and analyzing nonproportional relationships. We will have a quiz on Friday.
