Mt. Washington Elementary School

January 2023

Principal's Message

Happy New Year! I hope that 2023 brings you and your family happiness, love and success.

As the year begins, I hope you have set some intentions for this year. Our students set intentions or goals in August for the 2022-2023 school year. These help them know what they are working towards, as well as helps them take responsibility for their learning. It takes the ownership away from the adults. As we return to school for the Spring semester, you might spend some time at home discussing the intentions your child set for themselves in August. Ask them how they are progressing in meeting the goal? How do they know? What else do they need to do to meet their goal for the 2022-2023 school year?

This Spring semester, I am excited to announce we will host Monique Marshall for student assemblies and parent workshop. Ms. Marshall has worked with our school community in the past and I am thrilled to welcome her back to MWES. She is a diversity, equity, and inclusion consultant, as well as a former elementary school teacher. Click on this link to learn more about Monique Marshall. Ms. Marshall will help us continue with our DEI work. Please be on the lookout for dates. This is possible thanks to FOMWS!

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

I am sharing the Washington Post article below in hopes it helps you think about the messages are you sending to your young children about race, gender, sexuality, religion, etc. Whether we openly talk about these topics as a family or not, our children are forming their opinions about these topics.

Our school community is invested in helping our students navigate these topics in ways to help them see our diversity as a strength and beauty in our community.

Library Open At Recess and Lunch

Our students can now enjoy the library at their recess and lunch play times. This is all possible thanks to our new library aide, Ms. Rachel.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day - January 16, 2023

Dr. King's words and actions continue to inspire so many people to fight for justice in our country. It amazes me how little has changed since Dr. King climbed the marble steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. and spoke to thousands of people. How do we teach the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr.?

Here are some resources for you to use with your children at home.

School will be closed on January 16th in honor of Dr. King.
