iMiddle Parent and Community News

iMiddle news for the week of 12/8 - 12/12

Message from Principal Labas

Greetings,

Yesterday, we spent the day at the Del Mar Fair showcasing student work- we were 3D printing and demonstrating Computer Science programming using a program called Hop Scotch and Scratch. This was such a fun event and iMiddle won a trophy for most "Outstanding"! It was great to see so many innovators and schools showcasing not only what they know, but also what they can do!

This week all students will be learning computer programming during their advisory class. We will have beginning and advanced courses available. As you already know, computers are everywhere, but fewer schools teach computer science than 10 years ago. Girls and minorities are severely underrepresented. Good news is, we’re on our way to change this.

In one week last year, 15 million students tried computer science! Computer science was on homepages of Google, MSN, Yahoo! and Disney. Now the Hour of Code movement is aiming for 100 million students. That’s why every one of the iMIddle students are joining in one of the largest learning events in history: The Hour (week) of Code, during Dec. 8-14. Our students will also be teaching some of our students in our local feeder schools how to code. Ask you child at the end of the week if they can code a computer and I bet the answer will be "yes"!

The holiday season is in the air and I wanted to thank our parent foundation for their generous donation of the wreaths hanging around the school. It looks more festive and adds some holiday cheer to our day!

Have a wonderful week!
