What Did We Learn This Week?

Language Arts

Our literacy blocks these past 2 weeks have been short but we have managed to squeeze in some great lessons. We continued the 'h brothers' or digraphs as our spelling rule. We worked in our Focus Books on sequencing facts from a small article. In grammar, we reviewed subjects and predicates, as well as statements, questions and exclamations. Mrs. Buc reminded us that a complete paragraph has a topic sentence, at least 4 details and a concluding sentence. We created Main Idea Trees to reinforce the concept of main idea and details. We are working on that in our writing journals. We have been practicing our magic c letters in our handwriting books. We began an author study on Marc Brown. We watched a video about him and will be reading several of his books this trimester and doing activities related to them. We all read Arthur's Pet Business and completed a story map to help retell the story using a model called: Someone, Wanted, But, So, and Then.

These past two weeks, we worked on place value to the 100,000's place. We played lots of fun games to review. We have done a great job on this concept. We are ready to be tested on it next week!

Dear 2nd grade parents,

YOM KIPPUR was in the center of our learning this week. We practiced Holiday vocabulary,

listened to a story, learned a new song and did an activity with תשובה TESHUVAH (repentance).

GMAR CHATIMA TOVA, גמר חתימה טובה - = may you will be inscribed for a good year,

Shabbat shalom, שבת שלום

Social Studies

In Social Studies, we continued our first unit by learning about our country's three branches of government by reading about each branch in our Social Studies book, watching a Brain Pop Jr. video, and creating our own Branches of Government trees. We also reviewed important map skills, got started on making flash cards for vocabulary words from this Unit that we need to review for our test, and learned about Community and State Governments. We will start taking home our Social Studies folders to review for our test next week. The tutorial will be on Wednesday, October 7 from 3:20-3:50. Please let me know if your child will attend! Our test will be Thursday, October 8.

Please send in canned and boxed goods in the bag we provided. The food bank cannot collect any glass or baby food. When you return the bag to school, the bags can be placed in the food bins in the carpool lobby. The Second grade team really appreciates your support!!
