February 2018

Spring is on the Horizon

The doldrums of winter are a thing of the past as we move towards warmer weather, longer days, and lots of vitamin D. With only a little bit of snow left on the ground, spring will be here before we know it! Here at MVMS, we are anxiously awaiting the opportunity to open up windows and let the fresh air flow through the building.

Spirit Week

The 6th grade pulled off an upset for the ages as they took home the Spirit Week Pride Cup. This was a fantastic week filled with costumes, laughs, and lots of school spirit! Thank you to all the students and staff for making this such a memorable week. The themes included: Pajama Day; Throwback Day; Hawaiian Day; Superhero Day; and Class Color Day.

The week culminated in a spirit assembly that made the "Cameron Crazies" of Duke University look like child's play. All grades were fired up to the max as they cheered on their classmates during the spirit games including: Musical Dots; Name that Tune; Hula Hoop Circuit; Rock, Paper, Scissors; Chocolate Unicorn; Balloon Rally; and an epic Dance Off.

Thank you to Mrs. King, Mrs. Malone, and all of Student Council for your efforts in making Spirit Week a success!

Staff Pride

The 80s were in full effect as the MVMS teachers relished the opportunity to dust off their storage boxes and show the students what real style is! Throwback Day was a great time and reminded us all that hammer pants never went out of style!

Winter Carnival

Seventh and eighth grade students had a blast at the 2018 Winter Carnival Dance. The evening was filled with group dances, conga lines, snacks, and selfies. Thank you to Mr. Livernois for setting the mood as the guest DJ for the evening.

Tree Update

Due to a scheduling conflict, our surprise guest speaker pushed their visit to MVMS back to March 9th. This worked out perfectly as we still have kindness to complete before we can meet our school-wide goal of 1,000 acts of kindness. It has been a pleasure to watch the leaves go up on the tree as it continues to grow.

We would like to extend a huge thank you to Mrs. Wilson's class for helping us get an up-to-date count on the leaves. Entering into break, we have just over 200 acts of kindness left to complete in 5 days! Mrs. Searah has set up a fun Kindness Bingo game to to encourage students to participate in acts of kindness throughout the building!

All Things Choral

The next choral concert is March 21st at the high school. The show will include all ensembles, grades 6-12. The seventh and eighth grade chorus will perform alongside the high school group. The sixth grade chorus is currently preparing for a May 9th concert along with the elementary schools' choral programs throughout the district.

Several choral students are preparing to represent MVMS in the Elementary Honors Chorus and the Southwest District Festival. They will spend all day working with a guest conductor and perform in a concert with some of the best middle school singers in NH.

In the spring, all chorus members will sing the National Anthem at a Fisher Cats game. Seventh and eighth graders are looking forward to going to Canobie Lake Park to participate in the Music in the Parks. They will perform in front of the public and participate in a workshop to improve their musicianship. Afterwards, they will have the opportunity to enjoy all the fun and excitement the park has to offer!

Lymphoma Society Fundraiser

Merrimack Valley Middle School once again participated in the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society fundraiser to raise money and awareness toward finding a cure for blood cancers. Through the Student Series program, MVMS students spent three weeks donating money through their Pride Blocks toward this cause. All proceeds raised through our school community help fund future research to find better treatments and cures, while also providing free education, information, and support for those impacted by blood cancer. This year, our school collected $3,027.19 through our classroom and online donations. Thank you to all those who participated and supported the fundraiser this year. All of us at MVMS are thankful for your generosity and kindness.

Big picture
An extra special shout out of thanks goes to Abigale O’Brien! Abigale raised $2,137.28 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. She did this by receiving donations and by hosting a spaghetti dinner along with a raffle and bake sale at the United Church of Warner. She also made over 450 chocolate lollipops, and had two bake sales at Sugar River Bank in Warner, and two bake sales at Aubuchon Hardware in Warner. The amount of time that she dedicated toward helping this cause is impressive. Her family and MVMS are very proud of her exceptional efforts. Her perseverance and commitment should be a lesson for us all. Abigale hopes that the money she raised will save a child's life.
MVMS would also like to thank Mr. Mahoney for his ongoing hard-work and dedication in organizing this fundraiser which continues to benefit a great cause. Mr. Mahoney was thanked for all of his efforts during the spirit rally with a pie to the face!
