celebrating Black History Month at franklin academy
Principal's Corner
I want to start this week by thanking you all for your support. As I mentioned in our last newsletter, this week our attendance was crucial for our FTE. I am very happy to report that our Franklin Academy Sunrise Campus has a total of 1,376 students and everyone will count since all our students attended the school during the required window. Way to go, Chargers!!!
Also, I want to thank our families for the support showed during the second edition of our Daddy Daughter event. Our students and fathers-father figures dressed up to celebrate a wonderful time together. Mothers, stay tuned because this year we will be saving a special time with your sons.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Ms. Francis
Ms. Francis is our ELA coach. She has been at FASUN from our first day and has taught our third and fifth grade students.
What made you become a teacher? To be honest, I initially started teaching as a way to be closer to my daughter. After seeing how I interacted with the children, the principal at the time suggested that I pursue teaching more. After taking her suggestion, I realized that it was the best thing that I have ever done and I encountered that it was also my passion – to teach kids, watch them learn and grow within their education.
How long have you been teaching? What was your favorite grade to teach?
I have been teaching for 15 years. Initially, my favorite grade to teach was 3rd grade. Recently, I started teaching 5th grade and I love it just the same.
If you weren’t a teacher, what would you be? If I was not a teacher, I would be a nurse because I enjoy helping people and making them better.
When you are not teaching, what activities do you do? When I am not a work, I enjoy spending time with my family and friends, watching old movies, shopping and reading.
In my sport, you have a walk up song. What would yours be? If I had a walk up song, it would be “I Am Blessed, Every Day of My Life I Am Blessed."
AROUND FRANKLIN...
Many things are happening at Franklin to celebrate this month, from our lower grades to our MYP students.
Second grade is hard at work preparing for our 3rd Annual Black History Living Museum that is at the end of the month. We have been researching online, collaborating with others and creating timelines of our famous people in preparation for the day we bring them to life!
Our fifth grade students will also be completing a project about individuals who impacted our XXI century world. Our students will be researching and learning about influential people like George Washington Carver or Sarah Boone.
And our music teacher, Ms. Marrapodi, wants to challenge us with the following trivia question: Do you know who Scott Joplin is?
Eighth Grade Science: Message from Ms.McEndarfer
It is exciting to realize how fast time really does fly! By the end of this week, our 8th grade scholars will have finished all of their science 8th grade level curriculum! With that being said, that means that it’s crunch time to start reviewing for their Science FCAT they will be taking on May 1st! By the end of this week, our students will begin their Earth & Space review Unit of all the material they have learned since 6th grade.
In addition to what we are covering in class for review, I would highly recommend the following book to help in your scholar’s review at home: Everything You Need to Ace Science in One Big Fat Notebook: The Complete Middle School Study Guide (Big Fat Notebooks) It is available on amazon.com (link) as well as at Barns & Noble for about only $12. I will be assigning the students some modules to complete for review on the computer in the weeks to come as well. Please keep an eye out for my emails (and messages on Edmodo) on updates and other review material as we get further into our review Units in class. I look forward to working with your scholars to help lead them to success on this test!

OUR SUN-RISERS OF THE WEEK
Ms. Scott (MYP Arts) is such a positive influence for our kids; she always has a smile on her face. All the kids from k-8 love Ms. Scott. Thank you for being a great teacher, mentor and coach.
Ms. Plummer (4th grade) for her technical magic and support in helping with the National School Choice video.
Mrs. Hyman (2nd grade) always brings support to others, asking if there is anything she can do to help. Thank you, Ms. Hyman!!!
Ms. Escar (2nd grade)“ I have had the opportunity to share parent conferences with [her] and I absolutely loved listening to her share with the parents the students work, details of mistakes made and how to show the parent how they can help at home. She never rushes the conferences to finish it early, makes sure the parent understands and leaves with every question answered. I love conferencing with her.”
All of MYP Teachers, for the consistency this week regarding the uniform and tardy policy. Our students are entering the classroom with a different attitude and expectations. They see that we are in one accord regarding Franklin’s standards and dress code policies.
Mr. Singh (MYP Individuals and Societies) “First of all my former students speak very highly of Mr. Singh. And we all know that students can be brutally honest… I was expressing my frustration with students lack of effort and my difficulties getting them motivated this year. Shortly after venting my frustration Mr. Singh came back over and suggested I try some math competitions. I love the dynamic that a relatively new teacher would share ideas with an experienced teacher. Old dogs can learn new tricks. Thank you Mr. Singh.”
Mrs. Meisinger (1st grade): “Thank you for being an awesome neighbor and team member and always sharing your resources with the team ! I know if I ever need ANYTHING I can knock on your door!”
Ms. Duke (1st grade): “Thanks for being by my side and always offering to help with whatever I need.” “You did a PHENOMINAL job getting our students and staff involved for School Choice Week! The video was great, and you really got all of us thinking about how we all got here and why we stay!”
