Navigating Forward Together
2.5.21
Hello Oakland Families,
Bundle up this weekend, it is sure to be cold!! As the winter winds remind us how cold it can get we are cozying into our new schedules here at Oakland. Thank you all for your patience and support as we adjust to the hybrid schedule for both in-person and remote students.
We have a lot of different information about special events coming up in this edition. We hope to see you and your family at some of them!
As always, if there is anything that we can do to assist your family, please do not hesitate to let us know.
Sincerely,
Rebecca Adams and Lindsay Burns

Kindness Week Feb. 8 - 12
The world can use some extra kindness right now and Oakland Elementary is going to deliver! We will participate in the 10th annual Great Kindness Challenge the week of February 8-12, 2021 and we enthusiastically invite our entire community to join in and cheer us on.
The Great Kindness Challenge, presented by the global nonprofit Kids for Peace, was launched with three Carlsbad, California schools in 2012 to address bullying and to foster connection, inclusion and compassion. The annual program has multiplied in enrollment each year, having grown to over 15 million students in 30,000 schools, reaching across all 50 states and 115 countries.
While the excitement of The Great Kindness Challenge is enormous, it is the simple acts of kindness that prove to be the biggest hit. Some of the items on the checklist are: wave at 25 people, help your teacher with a needed task, read a book to a younger student and safely sit with a new group of kids at lunch. Big or small, every act of kindness makes a difference.
Let’s all help make a positive difference. Let’s join together, lift each other up, cheer each other on and do our part to create a kinder Lake Villa and Antioch and a more compassionate world.
About The Great Kindness Challenge The Great Kindness Challenge is a positive and uplifting program that creates a culture of kindness in schools, communities and the world. Using a kindness checklist, schools and families are challenged to complete as many acts of kindness as possible. The School Edition is usually an annual one-week celebration during the last week of January. The Family Edition is year-round. Schools and families may get involved by signing up at no cost: http://greatkindnesschallenge.org. The Great Kindness Challenge is made possible by the generosity of our sponsors: Toy Foundation, ViaSat, Nordson and McGraw-Hill Education.

Black History Month
At Oakland and in Antioch CCSD34 we are doing more work to recognize and celebrate all of the amazing individuals that make up our community. While looking at specific months and days is a small start, it is our aim to continue to grow ourselves and one another in knowledge.
A few highlights that we have here at Oakland for Black History Month are:
- A periodic table that features a number of individuals highlighted for their achievements and contributions to our lives. The categories include: activists, musicians/singers, government figures, artists, scientists, actors/actresses, famous firsts, entrepreneurs, athletes and authors. Upon its completion, we will send photos home in our newsletter for you to be able to see.
- Interactive banner of African American figures that will be colored by our students. We will also send a picture of this home upon its completion.
- Each morning our announcements will feature clues about a prominent African American. Students will have the day to either research or guess who they think it was with the answers being revealed the next day.
- Various grade levels are working on special stories or units, including our 5th graders that are doing a research project.
- Our Oakland Library has many books available that you can look for under our Black History Month collection in Destiny. Below are just a few of the titles!
Checking Out Library Books
All students can still check out books through the Destiny Discover app on their iPads.
If students are in-school learning, books will be delivered to their classroom. Students that are remote learning will get them with their supplies in their material bag.
