Classroom Needs
If you have any old magazines you are no longer using, please send them to school with your student. They will used them during our Daily 5 Word Work time to search for letters to build their spelling words. I will cut out words for the students to choose letters from. They will not be looking through the magazines.
Bible
Thanksgiving
For the next week and two days we will begin a study of thankfulness. Our story is about Solomon and the Temple. We will continue to read Psalms about thankfulness - Psalm 136 and 100. I have really enjoyed listening to their reactions to the Psalms. Some of the language is hard to understand, but we have discussed the words and their understanding seems to be growing.
Our verse is Psalm 106:1 - "Praise the Lord. Give thanks to the LORD, for his is good; his love endures forever.".
Math
We will conclude the chapter on Addition to 12 with a test on Tuesday. The hardest concept in this chapter is adding three numbers. We are taking an extra day to review.
The next chapter is Telling Time and Calendars. We will begin learning telling time to the hour and half hour before the Thanksgiving Holiday and continue when we return.
Heritage Studies
Jamestown and Plymouth are our next two chapters. My family and I have visited Jamestown and have many pictures. The students are excited to see them.
Our study of Plymouth will include travel on the Mayflower, help from the Wampanoag tribe and the struggles of the first winter.
There will be little projects coming home before Thanksgiving.
Language Arts
Spelling
We have come to another week of Review Words. All ten of the words have been on previous tests.
ax, bath, bring, chat, crab, drank, drum, glass, must, splash
Phonics
We are working with Miss Long and Marker e with long a, i, o, u. Examples of this are, late, white, bone and June. Toward the end of the week we will begin to discuss the suffixes -er and -ing being added to long vowel words. This is when confusion usually begins. For short vowels we doubled the consonant, but now we will just add the endings after dropping Marker e. It takes a bit, but they do get the hang of it. They will have a lot of practice.
Thanksgiving Feast for Students
Next Tuesday is our Thanksgiving Feast for our students. It is also early release at 12:30. There is NO AFTERCARE.
School will resume on Monday, November 28.
