Campus Connections
August 8, 2016
Message from Jeff and Yolanda
Throughout the 2016-2017 school year, the hope is that this year's theme “We Are Family” is not only a phrase but continues to be our way of work. More than ever “We Are Family” is important as a unifying power as we navigate our transition of distinct programs (high school, adult basic education, GED, adult ESOL, career programs, community education). Different, but yet so much alike, we share one campus under two leaders. Just like any family, the Lorenzo Walker family is bounded together by interaction and interdependence and a shared vision of providing rigorous and relevant educational experiences that prepare all students with both the academic and technical skills necessary to succeed in their chosen careers and in further post secondary studies.
Like any family, we experience joy, loss, and challenges but we band together for better or for worse. We all take pride in celebrating LWTHS accomplishments for being an “A” school five years in a row. Why? Because, in our own way, we have all played a part by serving our students and families. Our staff, faculty and students work as one to orchestrate a magnitude of community events, on and off campus, including tours and the Fly-In, Cruise-In for the purpose of raising scholarship funds for students and bringing awareness to our technical programs. We rejoice when our Adult ESOL learners’ essays are published and they are chosen to read their stories at the Florida Literacy Conference. Why? Because they are the parents of our high school students and/or a future technical program student. And in time of need, we are there for each other as demonstrated this past year by the incredible ability of our campus to pull together resources to find a home for one of our students whose family was left homeless when her mother passed away.
But much more than that, like families, we have created routines, rituals and structures to support the optimal development of all. We engage in, share best practices and learn from each other through instructional rounds, PLCs and PLTs. We enjoy trust, open communication and share the following foundation.
We are student-centered,
· collaborative
· learners
· data-driven
· results-driven
· passionate
· reflective
· "techie"
Our staff has a strong belief that dedication to and respect for family is an exceptionally powerful emotion and we exemplify it more than we sometimes give ourselves credit. We have been made better through the sharing of ideas, the lending of support, and in general the giving of ourselves to our students and to each other. We look forward to an exciting 2016-2017 school year and to the continued evolution of our Lorenzo Walker family.
