Bayani Challenge in San Remigio draws thousands of volunteers

Thousands of local and foreign volunteers joined the five-day volunteerism for nation-building event dubbed “Bayani Challenge” in San Remigio, Cebu.
As the event drew to a close March 27 a total of 2,018 volunteers took part in the challenge in San Remigio, according to Gawad Kalinga (GK) Cebu. READ MORE

Life they say is how we make it. People dream, work, fail. People dream again. Most are happy in working to achieve their dreams but yet, there are some who are happiest in fulfilling the dreams of others.
The Bayani Challenge Volunteers are very happy to realize the dreams of some of the less fortunate.
Never in the life of Nang Lelita Bueno did she imagine that life will begin for her at the age of 70. Bueno is among the 30 recipients of the houses that the volunteers of the Bayani Challenge 2013 will build in barangay San Miguel, San Remegio town of the Province of Cebu.
“Nalipay koog daku nga sa akong edad, makabalay na gyud ko og ako nga libre kay gibuhat man sa mga volunteers (I am so happy that at my age, I will already have a house and its free because it is built by the volunteers),” Bueno said. READ MORE
DOH celebrates World TB Day 2013

The Department of Health's Center for Health Development-7 (DOH-CHD-7) celebrated World TB Day 2013 Monday, March 25 with the theme “Stop TB-Makialam”.
DOH-CHD-7 had a memorandum of agreement signing with 12 local government units in Cebu for the TB Directly Observed Treatment Short Course (TB-DOTS) facility enhancement during a program held at Sarrosa Hotel.
The LGUs are: Toledo City, Boljoon, Balamban I & I, Daanbantayan II, Cebu Province, Mabolo & Luz Health Centers of Cebu City, Jagobiao and Tipolo, health centers of Mandaue City, Pajo Health Center, Lapu-Lapu City, Liloan, Talisay City, Danao City, and San Fernando. READ MORE

Sen. Loren Legarda recently made a quick audit of women’s programs in Mandaue City.
Representatives from the Technical Education Skills Development Authority (TESDA), Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), Department of Education (Deped) and from the local Public Employment Service Office (PESO) and local government unit, were made to attend in a dialogue with over a hundred women at the Mandaue City Public Market. Volunteerism inspires Cebu town mayor to help informal settlers
Mayor urges private sector to donate lots

Deeply inspired by the Bayani Challenge volunteers, San Remigio's local chief executive said he is looking into how the local government can help relocate the town's informal settlers.
Currently around 200 homeless families have "settled" along the town's coastlines, said Mayor Jay Olivar.
The construction of the Roll On Roll Off port in the town brought on the presence of the informal settlers in San Remigio. READ MORE

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) is seeking help in locating the family of an overseas Filipino worker (OFW) who died in Lebanon recently.
Alma Faburada Mintalar died of cardiac arrest in Beirut, Lebanon on Feb. 23, 2013.

Over 3,500 students pass 2013 S&T Undergraduate Scholarship Exam

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Regional Office 7 said 3,597 high school students nationwide qualified for the S&T Undergraduate Scholarship.
The Science Education Institute's (SEI) 2013 Science and Technology (S&T) Undergraduate Scholarship Examination was held on November 18, 2012 for School Year 2013-2014.
