NASSS 2019
North American Society for the Sociology of Sport
March 2019
I bring greetings and updates regarding all things NASSS. This includes the on-going successes and challenges in sport and society, the 2019 NASSS annual conference, Membership Registration and Elections, the passing of a NASSS pioneer and trailblazer Dr. George Sage, and more.
First, spring is upon us and there are a number of newsworthy issues and debates that I am sure are stirring up some new and old research endeavors. I trust that we as a collective membership community are continuing to challenge the headlines, illuminate the stories, and conduct research while we pursue grants, teach students, and serve our respective communities in ways that represent NASSS's mission "to promote, stimulate, and encourage the sociological study of play, games, sport, and contemporary physical culture".
Second, the Call for Sessions (CFS) for the 2019 NASSS Annual Conference is open with a closing date of April 1, 2019. NASSS President-Elect, Dr. Jeff Montez de Oca and the program committee developed an outstanding theme "Sport Sociology and the Responsibility for Decolonial Praxis, Decolonizing Minds, Indigenizing Hearts" https://nasss.org/2019-conference/
Shortly following the close of the CFS will be a Call for Papers and Posters. The conference will be held November 6-9, 2019 in Virginia Beach, Virginia. For more details on the conference program, accommodations, registration, the +1 Initiative please visit our website at https://nasss.org/2019-conference/ In addition, the NASSS Board and I encourage all to see website for 2019 conference award opportunities as a few are highlighted below.
Third, NASSS is now utilizing CVent as our new membership and conference registration platform. We welcome you to complete your membership for the 2019 year. To determine your membership status, please review our membership page at https://nasss.org/membership/
As part of your membership, you will be eligible to vote in our 2019 Elections! Information on these positions can be found our the NASSS website. See our Member Registration and Elections section below and the link for more details https://nasss.org/membership/
Fourth, Dr. George Sage. I would be remised if I did not acknowledge the passing of one of our beloved founding members and leaders in NASSS. I, like many of you, learned from and utilized his scholarship in my studies as a doctoral student and continue to use his work in my role of teacher and scholar. Join us at NASSS as we celebrate his spirit and honor his legacy! For more on Dr. Sage go to https://www.dignitymemorial.com/obituaries/greeley-co/george-sage-8157243
We welcome members and affiliates continue to connect with NASSS through our website, our Sociology of Sport Journal, our social media platforms, and through the range of scholarly involvements of our NASSS community.
Sincere regards,
Akilah Carter-Francique, President
