Terre Redmon, a local author, has again offered her services to read to classrooms. Here is the blurb she provided me: I have two power point presentations about how I became an author and how to learn to read using pictures. All three books have been published and I have copies available. This is just a hobby for me and I enjoy talking to the children and sharing my story so there is no charge. The titles of the books are:
Labradors for Life: Dallas Becomes a Mom
Labradors for Life: Hoss and Cali Learn to Swim
Labradors for Life: Cali Finds the ABC’s
If you are interested in reaching out to Terre, her phone number is 417-827-3141 and her e-mail is tarredmon@gmail.com
Effective School Correlate #7 is Home-School Relations which includes:
· Schools understand and value the importance of parent/guardian support.
· Schools understand that many parents/guardians are lacking skills to provide support to their children. Yet, schools still seek these parents’/guardians’/support.
· Schools have a well thought out strategy for engaging parents/guardians in schools with high FRL.
· Schools are not afraid to meet/engage with parents in neighborhoods, where many feel more comfortable than coming to school.
The draft of the Elementary Learning meeting for next week is here.
Some of you have asked why CDC reps are paid a stipend AND provided subs. While CDC reps are provided subs for CDC meetings, there are expectations for these teachers outside of the meeting time. Please refer to this job description sent at the beginning of the school year for expectations of the position.

Curriculum Updates
Literacy Connection
Teachers received The Reading Strategies Book and The Writing Strategies Book by Jennifer Serravallo to help them plan and implement reading and writing mini-lessons during Reader’s Workshop and Writer’s Workshop. A copy was also provided to the school library for those that did not receive the book. The lessons have also been scanned and linked in Canvas for The Reading Strategies Book and The Writing Strategies Book. Below is brief walkthrough of each book that could be used in a grade level meeting or a staff meeting.

Lead by Example
Use a staff meeting to introduce and model one of the reading or writing strategies from the new books. Here are two examples that you could use to process information at a meeting:
Reading Strategies
Summarize and determine importance.
Summarize or retell information.
Writing Strategies
Generate a list of people that matter to you in your building.
Discover what is close to the heart of your staff.
Numeracy
We have purchased several new books for your Professional Library at your site this year for Numeracy. They should be arriving within the next month. These are all wonderful texts that we believe will support you in your work this year. We will be offering sessions on Number Talks and Math Workshop during SPS Now in November if you would like more information on the concepts and procedures referenced in the texts. (below are cover pics of the books coming your way)
Guided Math: Numeracy Rich Environment
A great quote from Guided Math in Action is “Math workshop is a space where you make thinking visible.”
Although a numerate environment is rich in anchor charts, math tools, math literature, student work, student journals, etc. It is also so much more. A numerate environment consists of the language we use with students, the questions we ask to promote discourse, students sharing strategies and participating in critiquing the reasoning of others, mathematical vocabulary and peer feedback. It is the community of mathematicians that we have built and all of the artifacts and scaffolding that go with it.
As you visit classrooms, look...but also listen. What do you hear that tells you that this classroom has a Numeracy Rich Environment?

This week I've been reading the Seven Transformations of Leadership by David Rook & William Torbert. One of their concepts caught my attention. As we become experts in our work, we often become saddled with managerial duties, which can estrange us from the work that we love. To me, the message is clear: as we build our capacity, it's still heart over smart. If you are feeling bogged down with the daily grind, ensure you are making time for meaningful, personal connections with your staff and students to keep your why in front of you.
Looking forward to seeing you on Wednesday! Make it a great week!
Good stuff here...
October’s For The RECORD contains information about Transfers, specifically Transitional Transfers.
