CSCS Parent Smore Update!
February 23rd, 2020
A Message from Mr. Anderson
Here we are! February break is over and we are headed straight into the Spring!
One incredibly important part of the time between now and spring break is the preparation for the state assessments for our children in 3-6th grade. Below is the testing "window" dates:
ELA - March 24th-27th
Math - April 20th-27th
Science (4th Grade) - June 1st
NYSED has done a lot to to decrease the length of the tests from 3 sessions to 2 sessions and has eliminated the pressure of them being a "timed test" so that students can finish in whatever time they need. Although they are only 1 data point in an entire school year of learning, they are an important data point to see how our students are progressing towards proficiency in the New York State Standards.
As we get closer to the exams, I would encourage you to talk to your child about how prepared they feel they are for the tests. Have them talk you through problems and give you examples of what they are learning. What is the MOST IMPORTANT THING, is to have every student approach with a Growth Mindset to do the best they can, but not to become too nervous or be too anxious over it. Do you best! THAT is all that matters!
Please take the time to really enjoy this parent newsletter... there is so much too celebrate at our work together to grow successful citizens that make a positive difference in our world!

A Note from Mrs. DeCamp
Whew! I hope you all had a wonderfully relaxing and restful Winter Break! Some of you might have gone on a family vacation and some of you might have taken the opportunity to stay home and relax! Whatever your family did, I hope you found time to spend with your family and friends!
We are just about to start a brand new month, March! Now that we've had some down time, this is our opportunity as students, teachers, and parents to get back to learning and exploration with a fresh outlook.
We are officially just past the half way point in the school year! We have been in school 98 total days of school. Keeping in mind the importance of school attendance, students are required to be in attendance at least 90% of the school year in order to be in good standing. This includes half days of school, as well! Any child who has been absent 9 days or more is considered chronically absent. Since we work together as a school community, we will be contacting you so we can work together to support you with any attendance needs you may have and to help in any way we can!
As always, we are here for you and your child(ren) and will support in any way! Don't hesitate to reach out to me if you have any questions! I can't wait to see everyone tomorrow morning!

Over the following months, I will be exploring the world of work with the students here at Campbell-Savona Elementary. Students will be given the opportunity to talk about themselves to be able to provide a starting point to build upon while they are within the elementary building. Throughout the grades, students will be able to explore the world of work either through presenters, classroom presentations, field trips and individual meetings. Throughout this time, students will be able to see the connection between what they are doing here at school and how this will help them in the future. I would like to provide you some activities for your use at home to help keep the conversation going for our children. You can ask your child to name all the information they might know about jobs/careers. You can play “I Spy” careers in the car and during your outings. You could visit the local library and pull books that are related to careers that they are interested in at this moment. You can have your child interview various family members to get more information about careers. You could use magazines to create a collage/vision board with careers of interests. Lastly, you can explore careers with hands on learning such as cooking, working outside, sewing and more!

Health reminder from the Nurse's Office
Message From the Health Office in the Elementary Building NYS law requires children in PK or K, 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th 9th, and 11th grades to have physical exams. It is also mandatory that children in those same grades receive hearing testing and vision testing.
Many have turned copies of their children's examinations into the health office already. Thank You!
I Have scheduled our doctors, nurse practitioner to come to the elementary building to do the last of the physicals 3/6/20 and 3/10/20.
If your child is in grades PK-5, their physical examination will be done on one of those 2 days.
If your child is in another grade but you would like them to be examined (maybe for summer sports?) please contact me as soon as possible so that I can include them and get their screenings done.
I will be doing hearing screening randomly during the next few weeks, and will do vision screening 2/26/20, 3/4/20 and maybe another day if needed. If your child is not in one of those grades, but you feel that they may be experiencing some problems. Please notify me so I can get them in.
Lastly, Community Dental contacted me and they will be coming 3/9/20 to do presentations and education on dental hygiene. I will then schedule a day for them to come to do teeth cleanings. This is optional and not regulated by state law. Paperwork will come home from Community Dental for you to complete or opt out if you wish.
Lets keep our kids healthy.

Children's Miracle Network
We have had many people from our community get support and help from the Children's Miracle Network. Once a year we try to give back and have a collection jug in the Main Office. Please feel free to drop of some change and help support such a wonderful organization for kids and families!

Panther Learning Leaders' Trip to the Bath VA
Our Panther Learning Leaders went to the Bath VA to spread joy with our veterans. They were able to do projects with them and just hang out! When we talk about living our beliefs, I can't think of one more important than "Making a positive difference in our School, Community, Country and World...". The best part is how giving to others fills our own cups! Check out the pictures and quotes! A huge thank you to Mrs. Larrabee and Mrs. Presher for making it a priority to organize events like these for our students and community!
~Braelyn Elliott
"This field trip also helped me realize how important a little conversation is because a little conversation can go a long way, from helping them not feel lonely to just helping them feel more involved."
~Leah Loveless
"It was a really cool experience to go meet the people who fought for our country all those years ago. It really made me think about veterans in a much different way. Usually I think that war is bad and you should never go to war, but when I saw these people and met them I was really astonished. I never thought in a million years that they would be as cool as they are."
~Jason Miller
"When I left there I felt like I did something right and that I made someone's day."
~Faith Mettler
"George likes football and hockey so I made him paintings of his favorite teams and we got to hand out Valentine's Day cards. We had a great time. I loved it. I say it, but I also felt it!"

How Important is Setting a Goal?
If you haven't before, having this conversation with your child can be incredibly rewarding. Ask your child...
- What is something you want to get better at?
- What are ways you can practice to get better at?
- How can I help you? Can we practice and learn together?
Building on those connections shows your child that hard work, perseverance, and dedication to a goal can make them successful at anything they want to do! The added bonus - Time with your child around something that he/she really cares about!
