Short Video on How Parents Can Support Mathematics Learning at Home
This seven minute video created by the National Council Of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM), interviews various educators around the country who share ideas on how parents can best support mathematics learners at home regardless of age or level of mathematics.
More Ways to Support your Child’s Mathematical Development
In one handy page Jo Boaler, Stanford University Professor and co-founder of www.youcubed.org, lists 6 ways parents can support children's mathematical development. The document can be printed out and kept on the fridge for quick access!

Card Games
1st going into 2nd ~ Cards* should be shuffled and 5 cards dealt out to each player for this modified "Go Fish" game. Players try to make 10 with their own hand or by taking a card from an opponent. Player with the most sets of ten wins the game.
2nd going into 3rd ~ Cards* should be shuffled and dealt out face down. Players take turns taking the top three cards and practice place value by making the largest three-digit number. The player with the largest number keeps all cards but he/she must say the numbers correctly. Game continues until all cards are used and the player with the most cards wins. Game can be modified by making the smallest number and by making four-digit numbers.
*Take out the picture cards but keep aces to represent the number one in each game.*
Clock Games
K going into 1st ~ The hands, hours, "half past", and "o'clock" should be labeled. Children practice telling time and setting the clock to the hour and half-hour.
1st going into 2nd ~ The clock should be labeled as explained for K going to 1st in addition to "quarter past" and "quarter to". Children practice telling time and setting the clock to the hour, half-hour, and quarters.
2nd going into 3rd ~ The clock should be labeled as explained for 1st going to 2nd. Four small lines in between the hours should be drawn to represent the minutes. Children practice telling time and setting the clock to the hour, half-hour, quarters, nearest five minutes, and nearest minute. Children can also practice elapsed time of more than an hour.
Geometry Activities
1st going into 2nd ~ Children can create a book "All About Shapes" by finding pictures of squares, triangles, rectangles, circles, cubes (example: dice), rectangular prisms (example: shoebox), and spheres (example: beach ball). Include a drawing, the real-life pictures, and anything else children know about the shape on each page in the book. Children can also use a camera/phone to take pictures of different shapes and figures around the house/neighborhood.
2nd going into 3rd ~ Children can create "geometric creatures" using different 2D and 3D shapes from around the house. Ideas of things that can be used are paper towel rolls, cereal boxes, soda cans, bouncy balls, post-it note, etc. Items can be glued or taped together to make a "creature" that stands up on its own. Encourage the children to share all about the shapes used to make the creature.
