Problem Solving and Open Response
Reading and Writing Skills for Success
About this Presentation
Day 3, Teaching Reading and Writing Skills for Success in Problem Solving and Open Response Questions
Students often struggle with open response questions for a variety of reasons. This workshop will build on the work of the previous workshops and then focus on providing the necessary reading and writing skills needed to succeed in problem solving. Participants will learn how to teach students to anticipate, preview, read, mark up, and clearly answer all parts of an open response question. Several strategies will be demonstrated that break down the task of open response questions as well as ways to practice the crafting of clear answers. The final segment of the workshop will show teachers a simple way to design great writing assignments in math that are both easy to assess and important for memory.
Strategies: Quick Writes: Type One and Type Two Writing; KNSA; Preview, Mark it Up, and Look Back Games; Bar Models, Pepper, 7 Element Writing Assignment
Recommended for Grades 2-8.
As a result of attending teachers will
- be able to describe in student friendly format the critical focus areas for a clear and complete answer to an open response question;
- be able to use 3-5 strategies that improve reading of math questions;
- be able to implement KNSA as a method to improve students answers to open response questions;
- receive and create new materials to support the implementation of the strategies.
