OCTOBER 2021
Our Mission
Head of School Message
Welcome to fall everyone! We have been in school a little over a month and a half and time is flying by. I wanted to remind everyone that the end of Quarter 1 is October 15th, which is only three weeks away. Therefore, please make sure you are submitting assignments daily in each of your courses, attending live required class connects, and reaching out to your teachers if you have questions about your progress. NC Check-in state assessments in reading and math will be the week of October 19th for all third through eighth graders. Students, please make sure you take time to read and complete these assessments as they are a part of the data we have to report to the state during this first year of your charter renewal process.
I am excited to announce that the new Middle School Academic Administrator, Ms. Katie Gomersall, will officially start working on Monday, October 4th. She has several years of experience as an assistant principal and is ready to jump in and work with the teachers, students, and parents in the middle school. She will send out a separate introductory message once she gets started. Best wishes!
In Partership,
Marcia Simmons,
NCVA Head of School
Thank You!

NCVA Family Directory SY 21-22
Many of you have asked about additional ways to connect with other families in your area. If you choose to opt into the family directory, you can connect with other families in your area with students of the same age. You will include your name, email address, county, phone number (optional) as well as the grade level(s) of your student(s). You can then call or email to connect with other families! We are excited to offer this, and we hope you take advantage of the opportunity. Please remember, this is NOT mandatory. If you have any questions, please reach out to your advisor. Happy Connecting!
Help for the Holidays
Believe it or not, the holidays will be here before we know it! We recognize that this year may be difficult for many families as they consider the financial burden of purchasing gifts. Several agencies throughout the state provide holiday assistance, however, most have applications and deadlines well in advance of Christmas. Please be thinking now about whether you would like to apply for help. Check out the links below to explore these agencies that offer support. Many operate their programs locally so reach out to your local agency office for more information about deadlines and how to apply.

7 Mindsets
7 Mindsets at NCVA!
This school year, NCVA will be implementing a character education program called 7 Mindsets. Mindset based social emotional learning (SEL) identifies the patterns of thoughts which influence our feelings, actions and decisions. It leads to intrinsic motivation that enables a growth mindset in adults and students. Individuals who have a firm belief in their potential, an optimistic vision of the future, and a strong sense of personal authenticity perform better academically and forge more substantial relationships in life. We want nothing more than for our students to believe that they CAN do what they set their minds to in and out of school.
Each month this school year, student will be introduced one of the below mindsets in either the classroom, through our School Counselor Corner lessons, MS/HS Beacon Times, and advisor social sessions.

Tips for Success!
More tips for October!
- Check your Schedule & Announcements on Mondays - View your live class connect schedule & assignments every Monday. Checking the announcements in each of your classes also helps set you up for success!
- Know Your Info: SAVE school information in a safe place for easy access. Know your NCVA e-mail address, Your Student ID Number, and passwords for various accounts. Don’t forget to write down the names of your student’s Homeroom Teacher and Advisor in case you need to contact the school.
- Volunteer in class - Raise your hand, write in the chat, or offer to help a classmate by volunteering your thinking. The more you participate and give your best effort, the more you will grow!
- Email your teachers with questions or ask questions in class! - Asking questions helps you learn & complete things correctly, so be sure to ask questions to do everything right the first time!
- Retake quizzes with low grades - Now that you've learned more in your classes, go back to previous quizzes to retake ones that have a retake available. Review the lessons, review your previous quiz attempts, and try again for a higher score! Check out this video that will help you navigate to finding low quiz grades & finding the quiz to retake.
- K12 Customer Support: 1-866-512-2273 SAVE this number in your phone and keep it visible on your refrigerator or in your work area for quick reference. We all need technical assistance from time to time!
A Note from your AP, Mrs. Mosley McMahan!
Happy Fall, Students!
With the end of the summer season and transition to the fall season, I’m reminded of how we’re about to end our own first season at school: quarter 1! As we wrap up the first quarter, please use this time to review your grades so far in the semester to see what quiz retakes and missing work you have that are outstanding that can be retaken or completed. (Remember, teacher-graded assignments close after two weeks so there may be some assignments you can no longer complete at this time.)
Although you will continue working in your courses through the end of the semester and can access your grades continuously through then, you want to be sure to complete these retakes and missing work as soon as possible while the information is fresh in your mind and you can do your best on these assignments! I encourage you to also reflect on this first quarter. What were your successes? What are things you want to improve upon for quarter 2? Do you need additional support or would like more of a challenge? Taking the time to do these tasks and reflections will help set you up for success for the remainder of the year!
If you do feel that you need more support in your learning, we have FEV tutoring for Math & ELA, you have a customized learning page on your IXL dashboard with recommended practice activities, and you have access to the Big Universe library from the links on your OMS dashboard with books on topics for all of your classes! You can always reach out to your core teacher, homeroom teacher, or advisor as well.
Good luck as you end your first quarter; keep up your great work in the second quarter!
Cheers,
Mrs. MacOctober is National Disabilities Awareness Month . . .
The focus this year is on the idea that "inclusion drives innovation."
Someone like Stephen Hawking, arguably one of the smartest people alive, knows a lot about how important it is to feel included in order to share one's special gifts with the world.
At the age of 21, Stephen Hawking was diagnosed with ALS, otherwise known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. He was told he wouldn’t live to see 25.
Fast forward over 50 years. Hawking is still alive, battling his debilitating disease and refusing to let it interfere with his career. For 30 years he was a full professor of mathematics at Cambridge University. Now he directs the school’s Center for Theoretical Cosmology and has received dozens of honorary degrees.
He’s best known, however, for his popular books on science, such as A Brief History of Time. He’s also well known for his pioneering work in black holes and relativity.
"Intelligence is the ability to adapt to change." - Stephen Hawking -
Curriculum Corner: Check out the great work being done in classes across the NCVA Middle School!
6th Grade Science is studying about Space with Mrs. Groves & Mr. Cheek!
In 6th grade Science our students are having a “blast” exploring space!
With Mrs. Groves we started with making sketches of our solar system and then looked at why we see the cycle of moon phases every month. The picture shows Lola L.’s model of the phases with Oreo cookies. We’ve also been learning about tides, seasons, and comparing the planets to Earth.
In Mr. Cheeks class students have been researching the inner and outer planets and making postcards and advertisements explaining the unique features of their chosen planet!
Check out these great examples.
8th Grade Math is studying the sequence of transformations with Ms. Thompson!

High School Updates
Important Dates & Updates
Please continue to check your email daily and your class announcements. It is important that students or Learning Coaches contact each course instructor in the event of an absence. In addition to watching recordings of any missed Class Connects, students are expected to work with their teachers to make-up any missed assignments.
Small Groups…At NCVA, we are advantaged to have the ability to offer Small Group Targeted Instruction with our teachers during the school day. Small groups will begin the week of 9/7 and will be held between 2:00-4:00 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday depending on your courses. Invitations are based on classroom observations and participation, exit tickets, assessments, and more. If invited, these sessions are required, just like our morning class connect sessions. Our expectation is that all students will be in attendance if invited to ensure understanding, growth, and mastery of content.
How can I start strong so I can finish well? I am glad you asked...
- Please remember to check your email, course plans, and class announcements every single day.
- Attend all classes and engage and participate with your teachers, the curriculum, and your fellow students.
- IMPORTANT: If you are absent, students are expected to sent an e-mail to their course instructors and work with them to make-up any missed assignements.
