Characteristics of water:
Adhesion- Attraction of H2O molecules to other substances, water will move up substances due to capillary action.
Cohesion- Attraction of water molecules to each other, it's called surface tension.
Heat Storage- Water that can hold a lot of energy. It takes a while to warm up and then cool down.
PH Scale- Water can cause separation in solutions.
Polarity- Property of having poles or being polar.
Macromolecules:
A Macromolecule contains very large numbers of atoms, such as protein and nucleic acid. Their are four types of Macromolecules first their are Carbohydrates which are sugars, Then theirs proteins, next are Lipids which is another word for fats and finally Nucleic acids.
#1 Carbohydrates:
Info:
Carbohydrates are organic compounds made with Hydrogen,Carbon and Oxygen. Also they are the source of energy for the body and are found in most foods. Another name for Carbohydrates is sugar. Their are Three different types of Carbohydrates. Monosaccharides, Disaccharides and Polysaccharides.
Monosaccarides:
- Basic energy for all cells
- Examples: Glucose, fructose
Disaccharides:
- needs to be digested by human body to be used in cells
- Examples: sucrose (table sugar)
Polysaccharides:
- stores plant energy, needs to be digested by the human body
- Examples: starches, cellulose and chitin
#2 Proteins
Info:
Proteins are macronutrients that support the growth and maintenance of body tissues. some types of proteins are hormonal, enzymatic and Structural. Proteins help the body grow and work properly. Some examples of protein are in meats, eggs and vegetables.
#3 Lipids
Info:
Lipids are another name for fats. Lipids purpose is to make up cell membranes and long term energy. Their are two types of fats, first their are Saturated fats which are long chains of carbon with all bonds filled by Hydrogen. Second their are unsaturated fats which have double bonds which don't allow fat to solidity.
Saturated Fats-
Unsaturated Fats-
#4 Nucleic Acids:
Info:
Nucleic acids are known as DNA and RNA, they are the "building blocks of life." The Nucleic Acids are found in nuclei of cells and help proteins to be built. They also keep track of the bodies information.
