Duke Talent Identification Program (Duke TIP)
Attention 7th Grade Parents and Guardians...
Since 1980, Duke University has sponsored the Talent Identification Program (TIP) for academically successful 7th graders. This voluntary program allows qualified students to take the SAT or ACT in the same setting as high school juniors and seniors, thus better preparing them for future standardized testing experiences.
Because Duke TIP scores are not utilized by Fulton County, Taylor Road's counseling department has changed the process for identifying 7th graders who qualify for the TIP program. If interested in having their 7th grader participate in Duke Tip, parents can access their child's scores via Home Access Center (HAC), if they attended a Fulton county school in the 5th grade and/or 6th grade. Students must have scored at the 95th percentile or better on their most recent standardized Georgia Milestones, ITBS, COGAT, CAT, SAT, or any number of other acceptable subtests. Applications should be directed to the TIP program. Additional Duke TIP information can be obtained by calling the TIP office at (919) 668-9100 or going to the TIP website at www.tip.duke.edu/7gts
Important TIP Facts...
•Registration costs $75.00 (or $30 for a student who qualifies for a fee grant/free or reduced lunch). See www.tip.duke.edu/7fees or contact the 7th grade counselor for a Fee Grant Request form.
•Duke Tip School ID: 250348-FA
The TRMS counselors can help with basic questions. Contact the 7th grade counselor, Alexcia Massey at masseyas@fultonschools.org, subject line: Duke Tip. Due to the high volume of requests, please allow 1-3 days for a response.
Lost and Found
Parents, please remind your students to check the lost and found table outside of the cafeteria doors for lunch boxes, coats, agendas, books etc. We already have a large collection of items that need to be picked up. Items left over two weeks are donated to charity.
7th Grade Only
Dear Parent or Guardian:
The adolescent years are marked by a roller-coaster ride of emotions—difficult for youths, their parent, and educators. It is easy to misread depression as normal adolescent turmoil; however, depression (among the most common of mental illnesses) appears to be occurring at a much earlier age. Depression—which treatable—is leading risk factor for suicide. In addition, self-injury has become a growing problem among youth. To proactively address these issues, Fulton County Schools is offering suicide prevention lesson through Signs of Suicide Prevention Program.
Our SOS program goals are as follows:
• To explain that suicide is a preventable tragedy that often occurs as a result of untreated depression
• To provide students training in how to identify serious depression and potential risk of suicide in a friend
• To impress upon students they can help themselves or a friend by taking the simple step of talking to responsible adult about their concerns
These sessions will be conducted through our Health classes or another appropriate class on Thursday, October 13, 2016 . If you DO NOT wish for your child to participate in the SOS suicide prevention lesson at school, please print and sign the parent letter from link below or pick up a form in front office. If we DO NOT hear from you by the following date: Friday, October 7, 2016 , we will assume your child has permission to participate in this program. If you have any questions or concerns about this program please do not hesitate to contact your local School Counseling Department.
Sincerely,
The Counseling and Social Worker Department
